June 2008 Representative News in detail

Book mid year accommodation and on arrival reception NOW!

Please urge students to book their airport reception and accommodation as soon as possible.  World Youth Day coincides with our mid year intake and temporary accommodation options in Adelaide are filling fast.

Adelaide also hosts a number of popular cultural events in June and July, therefore temporary accommodation is in very high demand during this period. Budget accommodation, in particular, tends to fill up.

To avoid disappointment and the need to pay for expensive accommodation options, could you strongly encourage students to arrange their accommodation, as a matter of priority.  Please refer them to www.unisa.edu.au/accommodation/oar/default.asp for temporary accommodation options and to book their free On Arrival Reception which is available to all commencing UniSA students arriving in Adelaide for the first time.

Please remember that it is recommended that students pre-arrange their long-term accommodation before arriving in Adelaide. Information about long-term accommodation options is available at www.unisa.edu.au/accommodation

Managing Applications, Offers and Acceptances for high demand UniSA Programs

The University of South Australia is committed to being fair in allocating quota places in competitive high demand programs. For many of these, particularly Health Sciences programs, quotas are set for external reasons such as the limited number of clinical placements available or the registration requirements of professional boards.  Eligible students on a conditional offer in a pathway program may receive their results at different times.  Also not all applicants who have received an unconditional offer for these programs will be successful in gaining a place

To more effectively manage the applications, offers and acceptances for these high demand quota programs and to enable us to better serve the needs of our stakeholders, UniSA International is introducing an offer monitoring process. In discussion with the academic staff, we have set internal targets for the number of offers which will be made.  We will close applications for programs that have met their offer targets. This will ensure the number of offers we generate will be realistic and will enable us to meet our acceptance targets without setting up false expectations of a place with our potential students.

Representatives will receive two (2) weeks notice to send in any applications prior to applications being closed for a program.  All applications received after the closing date will automatically be assessed for the next available study period.  Representatives will always be kept informed of changes to our processes.  Thank you for your support of UniSA and we invite you to give us feedback on this proposal.

Apply Online Shutdown period 26th September to 7th October 2008

The University of South Australia's Corporate Student Administration System (MEDICI) is undergoing an upgrade. Also the University's two current student administration systems will be consolidated and provide the opportunity to merge all student records into one effective student administration system.

As a result, the student administration systems, which include Apply Online, will be shutdown between 5pm 26th September 2008 and 10am 7th October 2008. Therefore, Apply Online will not be available for online applications, nor will UniSA International be able to enter applications, create offers or process acceptances during this time.

During the Apply Online shutdown representatives, prospective students and UniSA staff CANNOT use Apply Online to:

  • apply online
  • enter applications
  • create offers
  • pay via web pay
  • receipt payments
  • enrol

UniSA International staff will have a read only view of Apply Online and will be able to check the status of applications in the system as they are recorded at 5pm 26th September.

Please advise any applicants commencing in the October 2008 intake of the Australian Registered Nurses Training Program (ARNTP) to accept and pay for their offer before the 22nd of September. This will give our staff enough time to process acceptances, payments and COEs so students can enrol before the program commences on the 8th of October.

During the shutdown UniSA International CANNOT process any applications except for Study Period 6 and Study Period 7 ARNTP applications which will be processed off-line. Payments for these programs will need to be by bank draft as web pay will not be available. When the system is reopened we will give urgent attention to the resulting backlog of applications, offers and acceptances.

We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation and understanding during that time.

University of South Australia’s NEW Engineering programs for 2009

University of South Australia is introducing 7 new Engineering specialisations in 2009 to meet the needs of industry and students nationally and internationally.

Why are the programs changing?

The common first year provides a practice-centred foundation to engineering that exposes students to the breadth of engineering as well as the application of engineering in servicing the community.  At the end of their first year, students will have a solid understanding of the diversity of engineering and thus will be in better position to choose their specialisation.

Changes to be introduced in 2009

The University will introduced a wider choice of engineering specialisations which are more strongly aligned with industry demand, particularly in the fields of mining and resources, defence, civil infrastructure, construction, environmental engineering and niche market advanced manufacturing.

ANU and UniSA collaboration to build national capacity

ANU and UniSA collaborationThe Australian National University and the University of South Australia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that builds on the Federal Government’s collaborative approach for strengthening Australia’s higher education sector.

ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb and UniSA Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Høj said the agreement provides expanded opportunities for students to study and move between the universities and builds a framework for working together in research and research training.

The first collaborative programs are expected to commence in the 2009 academic year.  ANU is the highest ranked and most research-intensive Australian university and UniSA one of the nation’s largest universities with a rapidly growing research capacity.  Professor Høj said the agreement was designed to build strength and capacity in the sector.

“To lift the quality of our higher education system so that we can prepare graduates to meet future challenges, we need to harness and develop excellence across the system,” he said. “This type of arrangement makes tangible the concept of a national university and UniSA is pleased that it can collaborate in this way while accelerating its own already impressive growth.”

The initial focus on Population Health includes plans for ANU and UniSA to establish programs in Epidemiology and Public Health on a common education platform.

“This will give ANU students access to UniSA allied health and specialised engineering areas, UniSA students access to ANU programs, and students from both institutions access to a jointly developed degree,” Professor Chubb said.

“This kind of intelligent cooperation recognises each University’s unique mission and ensures that students with particular career goals get the best the Australian education system can offer,” Professor Høj

UniSA's New Vision, Mission and Values statement

Vice Chancellor Professor Peter HøjThe new UniSA Vision, Mission and Values statement was recently approved by the University Council. As with all positive evolution, the statement retains elements of enduring institutional values but also encompasses and articulates some new directions.

Vision

UniSA will be a leading contributor to Australia having the best higher education system in the world, supporting the world’s best educated and most innovative, cohesive and sustainable society.

Mission

UniSA educates professionals and citizens to the highest standards; creates and disseminates knowledge; and engages with our communities to address the major issues of our time.

Values UniSA promotes and sustains open intellectual enquiry characterised by high standards of ethics and integrity. Academic rigour, excellence and relevance underpin our actions in research and its application, in teaching and learning and in engagement with our communities.

Engagement UniSA’s teaching and research connects strongly with the issues of our local, national and international stakeholders—students, alumni, staff, partners, professions, government, industry, academic peers and community groups.

Social justice UniSA gives effect to reconciliation with Indigenous Australians and builds social cohesion by achieving equitable educational access and outcomes across our diverse student community, through research that aims to improve the quality of life and by acting responsibly as a corporate citizen.

Sustainability UniSA contributes to environmentally, economically, socially and culturally sustainable development, and we aim to reduce our own
environmental impact.

Innovation UniSA anticipates change and acts quickly to seize opportunities and solve problems.

Openness UniSA is outward looking, welcoming diversity and the wide range of perspectives it brings, international in outlook, collaborative, creative, agile and enterprising.

"UniSA was the first university in Australia to develop and set down a list of important qualities its graduates should possess when they leave the University to start their working lives, but we really did not have a bright mirror of those qualities in our institutional commitments".

"This closes the loop for us and gives a clearer picture of what underpins our operations and our goals. It is also a powerful external communications tool, speaking to all the important questions about UniSA – why we are here, what our role is and what difference we seek to make in society.

I like to think of the new statement as a kind of credo or a least something that lights our path for the future and we look forward to working with you to put this into practise."

Warm regards,

Professor Peter Høj
Vice Chancellor and President
