International and Transnational Students
In 2004, UniSA had the largest number on international students in South Australia and was Australia’s second largest provider of offshore programs. Between 2003 and 2004, the number of international onshore students commencing studies with UniSA grew by 14.4 percent. A slight decline in the number of transnational students was experienced over the same period, reflecting the continued strength of the Australian dollar and the flow on effect of SARS, with its disruption to regional economies.
UniSA Staff Profile
In 2004, approximately 25% of UniSA staff (some 550 people) were born in 47 countries other than Australia and speak 50 different first languages. While all University staff have an indirect involvement in international activity, approximately 720 staff were directly involved in international activity in 2004.
Student Mobility
In 2004, UniSA students occupied a total of 128 semester places with partner institutions. During the same period, UniSA hosted students from partner institutions for 213 semester places. UniSA International also facilitated the enrolment of 48 full fee paying semester places from partner institutions on a Study Abroad basis. During this time the value of scholarships and external funding available to UniSA exchange students was significantly increased. For further information please contact Janene Pellarin, Project Officer Student Mobility.
EQUIS Accreditation
UniSA became the second Australian University to gain EQUIS accreditation for business and management programs. EQUIS, a European accreditation system, is the leading international system of quality assessment and accreditation for business and management programs.
National Centre for Language Training
UniSA’s Research Centre for Languages and Cultures Education is a member of a consortium that will operate the National Centre for Language Training. The Centre will offer programs in key languages, cultural awareness and cross-cultural communication skills.
International Space University
UniSA led a collaboration with the University of Adelaide and Flinders University to deliver the International Space University’s 9 week Summer Session Program. In its 17th year, this significant international space industry event came to Australia for the first time attracting 114 graduate students and 150 ISU administrative and academic staff from around the world.
Supporting International and Transnational Students and Staff
UniSA’s Flexible Learning Centre conducted international and transnational professional development workshops on teaching international students and preparing staff for teaching offshore. We also developed an induction program for staff of our transnational partners, introducing them to UniSA’s distinctive approach to teaching and learning.
Student Mobility Report 2000-2004: Planning for future growth
The University's Student Exchange Advisory Group endorsed a review of student exchange activity for the period 2000 to 2004 to analyse student exchange activity and determine growth strategies for the future. The report makes recommendations across traditional undergraduate student mobility, as well as discussing non-traditional mobility strategies.
