Bachelor of Industrial Design (DBDI) - Louis Laybourne Smith School of Architecture & Design

Program Director: Mr Peter Schumacher

Our renowned Industrial Design program at the Louis Laybourne Smith School focuses on the creative process directed toward problem setting and problem solving within the interface between people and things.

Preparation for entering the industrial design profession includes the development of skills and knowledge necessary to generate innovative and aesthetic solutions to a wide range of products and systems based upon the cultural, environmental and social needs of people and the places we inhabit.

The program prepares people to communicate design intent by using sketching, diagramming, spoken and written language, augmented by contemporary digital technology and three dimensional modelling, both hand made and virtual. Consideration is given to issues of sustainable and manufacturing technology within a social context directed toward our diverse global environment.Craig Nottage (2003), 4th year studio project, “Glass topped pool table, functioning prototype.”

The program takes advantage of its inner city campus and a diverse and technologically advanced manufacturing base in Adelaide, incorporating a rich variety of resources into the educational experience. Specialised streams of study include furniture design and design for manufacture, sustainable product design, transportation form design, together with a focus on design for disability. Students have the opportunity to participate in design study tours of local and international design schools and established practices, and in cross-disciplinary study tours to centres of product design excellence. Students graduating from this program have been consistently successful at securing design positions in Australia as well as in Europe, Asia and America.
