Discussion Boards, Links and Resources for ID students

These online resources are to assist with helping ID students in various ways: sharing resources and information (such as information regarding where to purchase materials), a forum for student discussion (each year level has its own Discussion), links to design websites (design competitions etc), timetables for the Workshop etc.

Course Points

Courses are allocated points according their study load. Course points, contact time and expected time spent outside of contact time working on projects.

Points            Contact      Time outside class (min)

6 points         6 hours       6 hours
9 points         9 hours       9 hours
4.5 points     3 hours       6 hours

A full time study load is 18 points a semester, 36 points a year.

Prerequisites

Some courses have pre-requisites; you cannot do them unless you have completed and passed other courses. This is particularly important for the Industrial Design Studio stream, if you fail any studio you cannot go on to the next studio.

Electives & BUGES

Electives are courses offered within the Louis Layborne Smith School of Architecture & Design, you choose which courses to take (hence electives). They are design related and are offered by LLS School staff in areas of Industrial Design, Architecture and Interior Architecture. There is a complete list of the electives offered by the school in the university Calendar; they are not all run every year. The electives being offered each year are published on the enrolment web pages.  In order to complete the degree and graduate, you require to complete 3 electives- (students who commenced the program prior to 2007 will need to consult with the Program Director regarding their elective requirements)

A total of 9 units must conform with the Broadening Undergraduate Education Matrix as Contrasting Studies. Students must complete ARCH 3048 Indigenous Design Perspectives and GRAP 2026 Introduction to Graphics to satisfy university requirements for BUGE content.

Minors

As part of the elective stream you can choose to do a minor stream in a particular design specialisation. To complete a minor you need to complete 2 elective courses in the minor stream and an Advanced Independent study in 4th year under the guidance of the lecturer responsible for the minor stream. If you are not doing a minor you can take any of these electives, except for the Advanced Independent study.
It is not compulsory to do a minor stream; they are for students who have a strong desire to specialise in a particular area. Many students benefit from taking a broad range of courses and exposing themselves to as many different experiences as possible.

Minors are offered in these areas:

Students doing a minor who go on to do honours can complete their minor by having their honours topic related to their minor.

Honours

Students with a GPA of 5 and above (to do this you need a Credit average for all of your courses) are given the opportunity of undertaking honours courses in their final year. The honours courses take the place of the electives in study period 5 in 3rd year and study period 2 in 4th year. Students who complete these courses and have a GPA of 5 and above in their final year receive a degree with honours. Honours will be discussed with you more in 3rd year.

Course Coordinators & the Program Director

Each course you study has a course coordinator; they are responsible for the delivery and administration of the courses. If you have any problems or queries about the course please contact them. The program director (PD) is responsible for the administration of the Industrial Design undergraduate program. Peter Schumacher is currently the PD.

You need to contact the PD for the following

To contact the PD call Vanessa Ursino on 8302 0216. Vanessa can take care of many of the day-to-day issues; if she is unable to assist you she will make an appointment for you to see the PD.

Email

Every student has an email account provided by the University. It is very important you check it regularly as important news and notices about your courses and the program are sent via email.

To Graduate

In order to complete the program and graduate you will need to have done the following things. Keep tabs on these as you progress through the program to minimise the risk of missing something and delaying graduation.

To graduate you need to have completed:
