Graduate Certificate Program
We recognise that many managers seek a short program to build their
skills and knowledge base to enable them to take the next step in their
careers. The Graduate Certificate in Business Administration meets this need.
The four course program is normally taken on a part-time basis and thus is especially attractive to busy managers who want to combine work and study. Students can apply to study with the University, through Management Studies TAFE SA, or through some of our partnerships with industry and professional bodies.
For those managers who are considering further studies towards a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration or an MBA, it is important to keep in mind that the individual courses within the Graduate Certificate are identical to the Graduate Diploma and MBA courses, thus ensuring that full credit for those courses will be granted.
Structure
The courses we recommend for the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration are:
Any 4 of the following:
- Leadership Dynamics
- Contemporary Management Skills
- Accounting for Decision Making
- Creative and Accountable Marketing
- Leading & Managing People
Credit for prior studies
Credit will not normally be granted for any courses unless it has been completed in a postgraduate program of study in a recognised university and is not normally granted for elective courses. Credit is granted subject to the approval of the Program Director.
Students who have a background, or previous studies, in a particular course may substitute a course of equal value and standing with the approval of the Program Director.
Entry requirements
Entrants to the program shall normally hold:
- A recognised University undergraduate degree or equivalent
professional qualifications and a minimum of two years full time
relevant work experience,
OR - A minimum of five years full time relevant work experience including significant experience in supervision and financial management and evidence of a capacity to study at postgraduate level.
All applicants are required to submit two referee reports and a detailed curriculum vitae outlining managerial and executive experience.
For international applicants for whom English is a second language, the minimum English language requirements are those which are standard within the Division and are outlined as follows:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test - a
minimum score of 6.0 in Reading and Writing sub scores and a minimum
overall score of 6.5;
OR - Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - a minimum score of
55 (21 in the computer based test) in Reading and Structure/Writing sub
scores and a minimum overall score of 575 (232 in the computer based
test);
OR - South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE);
OR - University Entrance Certificate (CELUSA) - a minimum score of 70%
for the three test/examination items and a minimum score of 60% for the
other seven items;
OR - Previous successful secondary or tertiary study where English was the first language of instruction.
The IGSB reserves the right to request completion of the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) to a satisfactory level.
Selection process
Selection involves consideration of:
- motivation to undertake the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration and potential to benefit from the program
- appropriateness of work experience, particularly the length, level and responsibilities of management positions held (including current position)
- quality of academic record
- demonstrated personal qualities appropriate for managers and leaders
Although a formal selection interview is not part of the process, the selection panel may ask to meet with a potential candidate for clarification of issues relating to their application.
