European Summer School (ESSAM)

Our School is now a member of the prestigious Consortium of the European Summer School of Advanced Management (ESSAM). This enables our students to attend the Summer School in the last week of June and first week of July each year.

Dates for the 2008 Summer School are from Sunday 22 June 2008 to Saturday 5 July 2008.

IGSB students who are accepted into ESSAM can earn credit for two electives towards their MBA. To be eligible for ESSAM, however, students must be more than half way through their MBA and have achieved excellence in their academic results.

The benefits of ESSAM

The idea of ESSAM originated at Glasgow University, which hosted and ran the first summer school in partnership with the Aarhus Business School in 1988. The fundamental purpose is to provide an international education experience for part-time, post-experience MBA students who are in mid-career. Typically the average age of such people is 25-40 on entry to an MBA program.

The purpose is to give participants:

A hallmark of ESSAM is the highly inter-cultural learning process. Students encounter cultural and social differences. Participating in this multicultural setting provides a basis for the development of excellent managerial skills.

Real life cross-cultural experience, direct experience with management styles and processes in Europe, along with the invaluable creation of lifelong networks and friendships are other significant benefits from ESSAM.

In a dynamic economic environment, where companies are competing worldwide, it is important to be able to communicate with people from other cultures. Effective communication requires a solid background in terms of knowledge about and experience with other people.

The optimal approach to enlarging personal capacities for understanding people is to be put in a situation where you have to work closely with them. This is important for employers and employees alike. At the European Summer School, this is achieved by bringing people together from all over the world and having them work on real-life projects in local companies.

The quality of experience for the participants is not restricted to academic content. Participants also experience quality management and organisation, and a smoothly run event in which great care and attention is paid to even the smallest detail.

Testimonials from our students

Bev GaughwinI would strongly recommend participation in ESSAM to MBA students at IGSB as a valuable and enjoyable learning experience.
The opportunity to undertake two weeks of intense learning, group work, and  networking with MBA students from many different countries and industries, in Europe was a unique and truly international experience.

We learned so much from the course work and guest speakers, and from our  colleagues and network of new friends from around the globe. ESSAM was very well organized and our Danish hosts did everything possible  to make it an optimal learning adventure. We worked hard and had fun, and  for many it was a life changing experience.

A very worthwhile experience, that added depth and breadth to knowledge acquired in the MBA program. I'd do it again!

Peter StevensESSAM provides a unique opportunity to spend two weeks with 100 MBA students in an intense learning environment exploring strategy and other learning elements.

It was intellectually stimulating and a great way to establish a global network of professional contacts. I would recommend it to anyone nearing the end of their MBA that wants an experience to remember to cap off their MBA.
