Cooperative research
IGSB staff are experienced in working in, and with, industry.
Whether it is in designing academic programs for current or emerging professions, pursuing research opportunities or providing consultancy services, the IGSB seeks to engage with industry and professional partners.
Cooperative research projects are jointly sponsored or funded by the IGSB with an industry partner, but can also gain access to government funding in some circumstances. The ownership of intellectual property arising from projects is negotiated on a case-by-case basis depending on the:
- equity contributions of both parties
- existing intellectual property brought to the project by each party.
It is common for the industry partner to have the right to exploit the final intellectual property commercially in return for a royalty to be paid to the University.
When clients in industry need expertise and resources to manage large or difficult projects, the IGSB staff can also be involved on a contract basis. Work is tightly scoped, with a set budget and well-defined objectives.
From time to time our people are also involved in sponsored research involving basic or strategic research not usually concerned with commercial outcomes.
Many of our staff are involved in consultancy on a regular basis when our clients require special skills and expertise to deliver a project. Outcomes of these consultancies are strictly treated as commercial-in-confidence. In 2007 key academic staff are undertaking consulting work in the wine industry and local government in South Australia.
