Strategy
The IGSB vision
An internationally
recognised centre of excellence for management education, which specialises
in innovative and culturally diverse postgraduate teaching, learning and
research and leads the integration of Eastern and Western management styles
across the Asia Pacific Region.
The vision for the IGSB focuses on bringing together Eastern and Western management concepts. In order to achieve this blend of East and West, we have created a team of 15 bilingual academic and administrative staff, each of whom is fluent in either Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Japanese, Malay, Indonesian or Javanese.
Their abilities have guaranteed our capacity to increase the number of our doctoral research publications in the Asia-Pacific region, and encourage collaboration between students and staff. All IGSB programs will have an international focus in content and context, while building on the multi-disciplinary, management strengths already established in the School.
IGSB strategies
The School has identified seven strategies to achieve this vision:
- Internationalisation of our programs
- Internationalisation of our research
- Building and retaining staff and creating a positive working environment
- Alumni development
- Enhancing industry links
- Identifying and promoting the image of the IGSB
- Ensuring continued financial independence
Priorities for teaching and learning
Quality of teaching
The IGSB has developed a Teaching Excellence Policy, which will encourage good teaching and the sharing of good practice in teaching. The policy operationalises and adds to the broader University-wide policy 'Policy A-35.A.9 Quality Assurance and Improvement: Programs, Courses and Teaching Arrangements'. The effective implementation of this policy is a key goal for 2007 and beyond.
Disaggregation of teaching using the Discipline Leader structure
The School has developed and begun operationalising a Discipline Leader model. The Discipline Leaders will be responsible for:
- the overall management of course content
- building a teaching team, including core and sessional staff both on and offshore
- identifying and resolving any issues relating to the quality of content or teaching as a result of student feedback
- managing the assessment processes
- ensuring the achievement of learning objectives
- ensuring consistency of standards.
In addition, Discipline Leaders will oversee the development of course study guides and associated teaching materials. Discipline Leaders will appoint and performance manage their teaching teams to ensure quality and consistency. These will be small teams within the discipline structure of teaching staff, research assistants and research and writing staff, thus disaggregating the teaching and learning of courses as a whole.
The effective development of Discipline Leaders, discipline teams and discipline resources, such as websites, is a major challenge for the IGSB over the planning period.
Integration of cross-cultural content/approach across the MBA and DBA
All courses (MBA and DBA) include both cross-cultural content and context. The School will develop learning and assessment grids for each course, ensuring these are prepared each time a course is developed or revised. In addition, the School has appointed a Professor in Cross-cultural Management who will support this process.
Blend of on campus and online teaching for transnational students
Online goals for the planning period include:
- development of discipline based web sites, in the first instance to support teaching staff, but in the longer term to also support our doctoral students, particularly those involved in transnational programs
- development of a new delivery model for our online MBA, which is benchmarked against international best practice and integrates effectively with Unisanet
- development of online support resources for all transnational courses, to help engage students in a more effective relationship where teaching and learning is spread over the entire term (study period), rather than being concentrated around intensive classes
- development of the capability to interact with transnational students and staff, particularly doctoral students and supervisors, through an Internet based audiovisual medium.
Scholarship of teaching
In addition to all of the points above, in response to this corporate priority and considering the 'Teaching and Learning Framework 2010 - 2015', the IGSB will:
- mentor staff to research, present and publish in areas related to teaching and learning, reporting their findings, innovations and developments both at conferences and in journals
- operationalise the newly approved IGSB Scholarly Teaching Awards. The awards are divided into two categories - General and Early Career - and benefit individual staff who are able to demonstrate scholarly achievements in teaching.
