Frequently Asked Questions

If I successfully complete the Graduate Certificate, can I then proceed to the Graduate Diploma or the Masters?

Yes - If you obtain a minimum pass of 55% (60% for new enrolments from the year 2000) in the subjects of the Graduate Certificate, you may apply for status in either the Graduate Diploma or the Masters degree, but will need to complete the additional core 'Introductory Unit' in Semester 1.

If I don't satisfactorily complete the Masters due to other commitments, or failure in the research project component, can I be awarded the Graduate Certificate or the Graduate Diploma?

Yes - if you have satisfactorily met the requirements of either of those two awards.

Are the courses available on a part-time basis?

Yes - but the subjects are offered during normal semester time, i.e., between the hours of 9am - 5pm, during Semesters 1 and 2. The research project component may be completed in the trimester period, November - February. Please note that the subjects of the Graduate Certificate (five of the core subjects of the Graduate Diploma and Masters) are only offered in Semester 1.

How much class time would I have to allow for each subject?

The contact time required is three hours for each subject, normally in one block, e.g., 9am-12 noon or 2pm - 5pm.

Are the subjects available on a distance education/flexible learning basis?

No - however, it is planned to offer some subjects on this basis in the future - if you are interested in this method of learning, please register your interest with the Program Administrator and you will be advised when these are available.

I'm not interested in enrolling in a degree course, I only need a specific subject/s to broaden my knowledge in a specialised area. May I enrol in an individual subject?

Yes - with the approval of the JUMP Admissions Committee, you may enrol in a subject on a non-award fee paying basis. For further information, you should contact the Program Administrator.

Are classes held at each university campus?

Yes - the unique concept of the Joint Program is that you get the best expertise from each university in a specific area.

Do I have to travel to different campuses on any single day?

No - the timetable is arranged so that you only have to travel to one campus on any single day.

There are three different Masters in Hydrology & Water Resources degrees: MSc, MAppSc and MEng. How do I choose which degree to enrol in for the Masters?

You choose one of the universities as your 'home' university, normally based on your undergraduate degree, and what area of research is proposed.

Which university confers my degree, if I study at all three universities?

You receive your degree from your 'home' university.

May I change the area of research from my initially proposed research topic in the Masters, after having completed the coursework component of my studies?

Yes - as long as an appropriate supervisor and topic are available and approved, you may change your research project for supervision by any of the five partners in the Joint Program, regardless of which university is your 'home' university.

If a new intake of students choose three different 'home' universities, do they attend different classes at those campuses?

No - regardless of the 'home' university chosen, ALL students attend the same class for each core subject at the university which is teaching that subject. The only time the entire class will be split is in Semester 2, when students choose their elective subjects.

Does the Joint Program offer scholarships or financial assistance?

No - the Joint Program itself does not offer scholarships or financial assistance, but each university has scholarship schemes. These are highly competitive, and applicants should contact the scholarship department of their 'home' University for details.

Does the Joint Program offer doctorates in Hydrology & Water Resources?

No - the Joint Program itself does not offer doctorates. However, each School/Department in the Joint Program offers doctorates in this field and inquiries should be directed to the appropriate area in each university.

I don't have an Honours degree, but I have worked in this field. Can I apply?

Yes - with the approval of the JUMP Admissions Committee, appropriate work experience in a related field, which would be equivalent to an Honours degree, is considered to meet our entry requirements.
