Severe diseases, like genetically inherited disorders, are not
easily recognisable until clinical signs are well advanced. By then,
the patient may have suffered irreversible disease. With molecular
medicine, we can now study these diseases intimately and discover
how they alter molecular function. This allows us to identify
biological factors as early indicators of the disease and to also
suggest possible treatment strategies. In this presentation, Doug
discusses several different diseases and their molecular impact.
About Professor Brooks
A distinguished NH&MRC-funded Senior Research Fellow, Doug has spent
over 20 years working with the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in
its world-leading Lysosomal Diseases Research Unit, developing a
number of diagnostic and treatment strategies for these devastating
genetic disorders. Earning a PhD in immunology from Flinders
University, Doug developed a number of tools that are still
state-of-the-art for diagnosing certain cancers. He was recently
appointed leader of the new Molecular Medicine Sector in the
Sansom
Institute at UniSA.
