Academic staff qualifications

The percentage of academic staff holding a doctoral qualification is a Corporate key performance indicator (KPI).

The University’s 2008 Corporate KPI target for academic staff with a doctorate is 56%.

As at 31 March 2008, 60.7% of academic staff held a doctoral qualification. There has been a marked increase over recent years in the percentage of academic staff holding a doctorate qualification. See the 2008 Annual Workforce Profile Report for further information.

The University's target of increasing staff with doctoral qualifications relates to the development of staff capability. It is a significant leading indicator of capacity for achieving strategic goals in research. Initiatives to support this will include:

• monitoring and enforcement of policy in relation to recruitment of academic staff with higher qualifications
• inclusion of doctoral progress in performance management plans
• improved data capture of completed qualifications at the local level.

UniSA will continue to emphasise the importance of timely PhD completion for currently enrolled doctoral staff. The following suggestions may assist when developing an academic staff qualification strategy:

• Monitor the progression of doctoral qualification completions including numbers and percentage of staff enrolled, and expected completion dates.
• Consider particular groups of staff (i.e. gender, age, academic discipline) where there may be barriers to completing a doctoral qualification.
• Consider the prioritisation of initiatives and impact on budget development (e.g. x% budget on development).

Guidelines have been developed for academic staff for the commencement and completion of doctoral qualifications.
