Can I use other leave entitlements to supplement maternity or adoption leave?

A staff member is entitled to take other forms of paid leave, such as long service leave, recreation leave, and time off in lieu. Any leave taken at half pay will affect super contributions.   If you wish to take some long service leave as part of your maternity/adoption leave, it is possible at either full pay or half pay. The half pay option is not applicable to any recreation leave taken.

Pay in advance

You are entitled to receive maternity/adoption leave payment, either over the period of your leave, or in a lump sum. Taking the lump sum option can affect how tax is calculated for the financial year.

Leave accrual

The table below provides a summary of how leave is accrued while a staff member is on maternity/adoption leave.

Accumulated leave over Christmas Period

A staff member’s entitlement to the accumulated days off over Christmas is dependent on whether the staff member’s maternity or adoption leave at the time of the Christmas break is at full pay, half pay or unpaid.

Extra Recreational Leave (ERL)

A staff member only accrues ERL for the period of paid maternity or adoption leave. ERL will not accrue during the unpaid component of maternity or adoption leave. This means you will be entitled to a percentage of the four ERL days, depending on how much maternity leave is paid and unpaid. If you are on half pay at any time during maternity leave, ERL will accrue on a pro-rata basis.
