When can I begin maternity leave?

You can begin maternity leave within six weeks of the expected date of birth. If you decide to work within this six week period, the University can request a medical certificate stating that you are fit to work in your current position. If you wish to commence maternity leave six weeks prior to the expected date of birth you must negotiate this date with your manager.

If illnesses or risks associated with the pregnancy, or any hazards arising from the position are identified, but you are considered fit to work, then you are entitled to be transferred to a more suitable location at the same rate of pay or higher within the University. This can occur until you are no longer considered fit to work by a medical practitioner or until your planned maternity leave commences. If you do move to a more suitable position, it will be on a temporary basis for the remainder of your pregnancy.

If the University requests a medical certificate stating that you are fit to work and you fail to provide this documentation, or the medical certificate states that you are no longer fit to work, you will be required to begin your maternity leave. The period of paid leave will be paid at your substantive rate of pay.
