The University of South Australia is a modern, flexible, open and innovative university, which aspires to international reach and impact. Its foundations are in the 19th century's extension of access to education, and it continues to hold equity and diversity as core values.
The University’s Statement of Strategic Intent affirms that
Together we:
This intent is reflected in the University's positioning statement, Educating Professionals, Applying Knowledge, Serving the Community.
The quality of the University's equity and diversity programs can be judged by the extent to which they act as a catalyst, creating an organisational culture, which actively values equity and diversity. The Human Resources Unit contributes to organisational change by developing and promoting policies, procedures, services and an overall environment, which reflects and responds to the social and cultural diversity of students and staff in the University community including their right to be free from all forms of unlawful discrimination and harassment.
Underpinning the work of the Human Resources Unit is a broad base of equity and diversity policies, guidelines and plans including the Equal Opportunity in the Workplace Three Year Plan, the Indigenous Employment Strategy and the Disability Action Plan. Also relevant is the University's commitment to internationalise the curriculum and consequent enhancement of students' experiences.
Universities which implement successful equity and diversity programs make a significant contribution to a society which 'deals more successfully with its diversity at the same time as it provides more opportunities for individuals in that society'. (Denise Bradley, UniNews, number 8, 12 July 1999).
