Vehicle leasing

Introduction

Staff members appointed on a continuing basis or on a fixed term contract of 1 year or more are eligible to lease a vehicle. Casual staff members are ineligible to salary sacrifice a vehicle lease. Please refer to the Salary Sacrifice Guidelines & Conditions for further information regarding salary sacrifice.

The types of vehicle leases available through the University salary sacrifice scheme are LeasePlan's Government CarPlan and Novated. The financial benefits associated with leasing a car will depend on the level of income of the staff member, the value of the vehicle selected, lease payments and kilometres travelled. The total cost of the vehicle is payable by the staff member and includes Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) in addition to the lease payments.

Staff members need to understand all aspects of leasing a vehicle before entering into any leasing arrangement and are encouraged to seek financial advice. The following is an overview of vehicle leasing at UniSA and should be read in conjunction with the LeasePlan User Guides.

Government CarPlan/Novated Leasing

Government CarPlan & Novated leases are supplied through LeasePlan and are fully maintained with fuel, insurance, registration etc. included in the annual cost. All vehicle quotes and orders are confidential to University staff members and are requested through the LeasePlan Drivers On-Line website.

Vehicle delivery may take up to 3 months (or longer) depending on the vehicle make, model & availability. Prior to ordering a vehicle staff members need to ensure that their employment contract is long enough to cover both the delivery & lease term.

Government CarPlan & Novated leases are designed for a term of 1 to 3 years and staff members are liable for the lease until completion.

A Government CarPlan lease applies when a vehicle attracts a good government discount and is an agreement between LeasePlan and the University with a side agreement between the staff member and University. On termination of the lease the staff member is able to purchase the leased vehicle for the residual value, refinance for a further term or return to LeasePlan.

A Novated lease applies only when a vehicle does not attract a good government discount. The staff member enters into a finance agreement with LeasePlan and a novation agreement between the staff member, LeasePlan and the University. On termination of the lease the staff member is able to purchase the leased vehicle for the residual value, refinance for a further term or return to LeasePlan.

The attached LeasePlan User Guides provide detailed information on the Government CarPlan and Novated leases, and include the steps required to request a vehicle quote and place an order:

Procedures to request a vehicle quote and/or place an order:

  1.  Staff member registers on LeasePlan’s Drivers On-Line (link below) – UniSA’s customer Code is 505029.
