Physiotherapy student profile

Kylie Brammy, Physiotherapy graduateKylie Brammy

Sport was always a very important part of my life and when I was fourteen I found myself at a physiotherapist for a netball knee injury. As a patient, I discovered what physiotherapy was all about. I had been interested in a career in health care and decided from then on that physio as a career was my goal.

UniSA’s physiotherapy degree is highly regarded within Australia and overseas. There are many job opportunities which can offer graduates the chance to travel the world.

The degree is clinically based and clinical placements were offered at metropolitan and regional hospitals, community health centres and private practices. I completed my final year six-week inpatient placement at The Alice Springs Hospital which was a wonderful experience for me.

The clinical placements are absolutely invaluable because they teach you how to examine and interact with clients to obtain the information necessary to make a clinical diagnosis – skills that can only be learnt from liasing with real clients rather than learning from hypothetical cases. Physiotherapy is a very hands-on profession which requires compassion, empathy and commitment.

Many of my tutors were also part-time clinicians and so they constantly had their finger on the pulse and were up to date with current treatment practices, research and theory, which was always inspiring. Physiotherapy as a career provides opportunities for constant progression and I believe that skills and knowledge should be frequently updated in line with current research, This ensures the best possible treatment and management for clients and their symptoms.

I now co-own and manage Precinct Physiotherapy with my sisters where we specialise in musculo-skeletal physiotherapy and pilates. We are continuing to expand and now employ 14 staff including six physios and three pilates instructors. I love what I do and I remain challenged in my career. My long term goal is to complete my UniSA Masters in Physiotherapy.
