Complementary and alternative therapies (CAT)
Complementary and alternative therapies (CAT) is generally defined as health practices, which are outside the domain of conventional health care. CAT refers to therapeutic substances and therapies based on theories and mechanisms that are not consistent with the western clinical model of medicine. The philosophy of CAT focuses on the individual becoming an active participant in maintaining their health and well being, with an aim of assisting the body to heal itself. Examples of CAT include herbal remedies, acupuncture, massage and naturopathy.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is a holistic system of medicine which involves a diagnosis and treatment specific to the individual and reflects their own unique experience of their disease. Acupuncture treats the individual's vital energy (Qi) and encourages the individual's mind, body and spirit to return to a harmoniously balanced state of wellbeing, by the insertion of very fine acupuncture needles into specific areas of the body.
Naturopathy
Naturopathy is a system of medicine originating from Europe. This system is based on a several central principles including a belief that all living organisms have an inherent ability to heal themselves (vis medicatrix naturae) and that this healing ability should be supported rather than overridden. Other principles central to the practice of naturopathy include the importance of treating the person as a whole, identification and treatment of the underlying cause, prevention of illness through healthy lifestyle, and empowerment of the patient to heal themselves.
In Australia the practice of naturopathy generally comprises four main areas being western herbal medicine, nutrition and diet therapy, homoeopathy and massage therapy.
