IMMS additional student costs
University study always involves additional costs to the main cost of
program tuition. To assist prospective students with their financial
planning, some of these study associated costs are listed below:
- Student name badges are required during clinical placements. These are not required until Study Period 5 (July 23rd) and will be organised through the School of Health Sciences and will be available in first semester (approximate cost $7.00).
- The clinical dress code requires students wear our “University of South Australia, Master of Manual and Sports Physiotherapy” polo shirt for all clinical placements. These may be worn with slacks or skirts (not jeans) and dress shoes (not sneakers). Polo shirts cost $24.00 and may be purchased through our school. They will not be required until Study Period 5 (July 23rd).
- In addition, students are required to participate in fitness programs that require appropriate gym attire, including specific running/gym shoes, shorts and t-shirt. Use of the gym in street clothes or shoes is not permitted by Occupational Health and Safety standards.
- All students are required to have current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification by the beginning of Study Period 5 (July 23rd) before commencement of the clinical courses 'Introduction to Clinical Practice' and 'Introduction to Sports Physiotherapy'. Such certification is available in Adelaide and is current for 12 months. In Year 2 of the program all students are required to have current first aid certification, consisting of advanced first aid, expired air resuscitation (EAR) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), oxygen resuscitation, use of an automatic defibrillator, asthma management and emergency trauma management certification. A combined workshop to cover all of these components is organised in February at an approximate cost to each student of $130.00(AUD), for which you receive national certification, valid for 3 years for most components. The equivalent courses undertaken individually would cost over $300.00(AUD). This workshop is run through 'First Intervention', a nationally based first aid management company run by professional paramedics.
- Our program does not have required texts you need to purchase. Instead we will direct you to certain journal and textbook readings that are available from our Library. While the University does provide students with a limited photocopy allocation, this will be insufficient to cover all of you photocopy needs throughout the whole program and as such you can anticipate additional photocopy costs.
- Prior to the start of classes in the summer semester students are expected to be familiar with computer use for word processing and Excel, using Microsoft Office, and accessing the Internet. MS Office is the system supported by University of South Australia. Students are required to type / word process assignments for assessment. Students are advised that in particular 'Biostatistics' is taught as a practical course that uses MS Excel and MS Powerpoint for tutorial sessions and assignments. Students cannot expect that the course lecturers will provide them with individual tuition on the use of computer programs in order to successfully complete the research courses. To assist students who are not competent in MS Excel, an optional 6 hour one day MS Excel course (focusing on data manipulation and statistical problem solving) will be conducted in the week prior to the commencement of summer semester classes from 9.00-4.00 pm at a cost of $150.00(AUD) per student.
- Stationery costs (stapler, hole punch, files, paper, etc) always add up during the year. The Student Association Shop is convenient and relatively inexpensive.
- Computers - the University and School use Windows PC & Macintosh systems. Students may use the common computer pools, however as these are often quite busy, you may wish to bring your own laptop if you have one. The majority of computers used within the University are Windows PC systems. It is expected that assignments will be typed (word processed).
- Articulated spines (a few) are available for hire ($30.00AUD) from the School. If you have your own spinal or peripheral models you may want to bring them.
- A small portable tape recorder to record lectures or patient assessments may be useful, especially if English is not your first language and/or a camera may be useful for recording practical techniques for personal use.
