Welcome from the Head of School

Prof Roger EstonIt’s my pleasure to welcome you to the School of Health Sciences. We are one of three large schools in the Division of Health Sciences, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Podiatry, Human Movement, Medical Radiation Science (Diagnostic Radiography, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, and Ultrasonography) and Health Sciences. With over 2600 students enrolled in the School’s programs and approximately 130 academic and professional staff, we are the only institution in South Australia to offer this range of allied health programs in one school. As such, the School provides more integrated teaching at the undergraduate level, opportunities for inter professional learning experiences and collaborative research opportunities for both postgraduate students and staff.

The School is equipped with excellent facilities and is committed to the creation and application of knowledge. We provide students with high quality learning experiences founded on experiential learning, evidence-based and research informed teaching. Applied research and student fieldwork and placements are conducted in collaboration with our strong working relationship with the public and private health, disability, ageing and education agencies. This approach provides an excellent platform for graduates of the School of Health Sciences to rapidly gain employment and become significant contributors to their chosen profession.

The School’s distinctive research profile is based on bringing together multi-disciplinary teams to work on projects that are both relevant and beneficial to the community. The School’s research concentrations include the International Centre for Allied Health Evidence, Nutritional Physiology Research Centre, Health and Use of Time Research Cluster, Public Health Research Concentration, Social Epidemiology and Evaluation Research Group, Body in Mind Research Group, and Exercise for Health and Human Performance Group which include staff and research students from the various disciplines in the School, providing the potential for a more holistic approach to health care solutions. Research findings generated from the centres inform the student learning experience and provide the most up to date knowledge and practices.

If you are a new or continuing student, we value communication and so if there is anything that you think we should know about, either about the way we are interacting with you or anything else, please let us know. We are keen to consult with our students and will always consider helpful suggestions for improving the way we do things. Whatever your area of study in the School of Health Sciences, our academic and professional staff will strive to make your academic journey a smooth one. We are committed to providing exciting, enjoyable and stimulating learning experiences. I encourage you to make the most of it, to be proactive in your learning and engage in the ride!

Best wishes

Roger Eston
