Definition of community service

Community service is a key element of our core business at the University of South Australia. It supports and exemplifies the University's mission. Community service grows directly from the staff members' teaching and/or research interests, or from their professional role in the University. Community service which will be recorded on this database includes:

• leadership positions in professional organisations
• ministerial or other appointments to government boards and semi-government organisations
• service to community organisations that provide the wider community with a service or benefit it might not otherwise receive.

The University particularly values those activities which are mutually beneficial to the University and the community: that is, they enhance the learning experience of our students, or increase the range and impact of research and may be income generating, as well as providing benefits to the community which would not otherwise be available.

In keeping with our mission, community service at UniSA also recognises our founding commitment to Indigenous Australians and other less advantaged sections of the community. Thus

• it often provides a section of the wider community with a service or benefit it might not otherwise receive
• it may be more likely to target a disadvantaged rather than an affluent community sector.
