Wee-Ren Kong (Physiotherapy)

Wee-Ren KongI chose to study physiotherapy to be a part of a person’s long term rehabilitation; following them step by step through the whole process. I chose to study at UniSA due to its reputation for having a strong industry/placement focus.

What I have enjoyed most about studying at UniSA is the friendly atmosphere and the ease of use of student services. In addition, especially in my program, all of the teaching staff have at one stage either been practising physiotherapy or have extensively researched specific areas and can provide experience and insight as well as theory and knowledge.

The practical component of the program has been certainly the most interesting and challenging experience as it gives you a glimpse of what you will be doing in the future.

In my second year, we were given the opportunity to have an observational placement to experience some of the different areas of physiotherapy. In my third year, we had placements in all the major areas of physiotherapy, which helped me to find where my passions lied. Now as a fourth year student, I will be working in the UniSA physiotherapy clinic and I have also been lucky enough to have my hospital placements at the Northern Yorke Peninsula Health Service – Walaroo Hospital. As well as these clinical placements, we also have community health promotion and occupational health and safety projects.

These placements give an insight into the diverse range of employment opportunities for physiotherapists and helps students find what their major interests are.

The University has a great and up to date range of equipment and practical rooms designed for physiotherapy use. We also have the on campus clinic and an extensive range of online resources for each specific subject.

After I graduate getting straight into work is my first priority, and definitely travel second. If given the opportunity to work overseas, I think that would be a great life experience. Further study I believe is a necessity to keep up to date with current practise and to move toward a specific field of physiotherapy.

I believe that to become a leader in this field you need to be a great team worker with a quick mind for analysing and dealing problems, and self confidence and an outgoing and achieving personality certainly help.
