Sylvie Callegari - Bachelor of Applied Science (Food Science & Nutrition) (Honours)

Sylvie CallegarI chose to study Honours as I had completed my Undergraduate Degree at UniSA and enjoyed it. I also knew it would increase my chances of getting a job once I completed Honours. I chose to undertake it as I particularly enjoyed subjects involving laboratory work and wanted to further my skills in this area. I knew Honours would also give me an insight into research, which I was considering as a possible career path.

I decided to continue my studies at UniSA as I completed my Undergraduate Degree there and I was given the opportunity to do an Honours project in an area I was interested in, so it was a natural progression to stay at UniSA.

During my Undergraduate Degree I enjoyed the practical aspects of many of the courses and also enjoyed going on industry visits which enabled me to link theory to reality. During Honours I enjoyed the many challenges associated with research and the opportunity to put into practice things I had been taught during my Undergraduate Degree. My supervisors were also very supportive which helped make my Honours experience more enjoyable.

The quality of the teaching staff was excellent! They were always willing to help and seemed to genuinely care about the students. They also had good industry links and did their best to tailor their classes to best suit the needs of students and to make classes enjoyable. I was also lucky enough to work in the newly built laboratories in the Hetzel building which were very modern and a nice environment to work in.

I hope to continue with a career in research and Honours was a gateway into this. It not only furthered my knowledge in an area I was interested in but also gave me the skills I needed in terms of literature searches and written and verbal communication. Honours was also necessary for me to enrol in a PhD which will allow me to further my research career.
