Lisa Stewart (Bachelor of Nursing)

Nursing has always interested me. There are so many different areas which I can do, so it gives you a variety of choices when the program is completed.

The overall atmosphere of UniSA is very relaxed and doesn’t make you feel as though you are studying. The community is very welcoming and there are a variety of activities I can become involved in. The teaching staff are very supportive and professional. They have always helped me through my studies and will put in the time to make sure you are achieving your best. The teaching facilities at UniSA are excellent. The Nursing areas were arranged like a hospital and give the feeling of really being in one.

I have undertaken three placements so far over the program. I attended a nursing home in first year, which was our first taste of nursing and I enjoyed it. Also I have been to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Royal Adelaide Hospital in 2nd year and these were both thoroughly enjoyable.

Placements are the most valuable part to the program. There are many things you learn on placement that you can not in the classroom. Working with patients, families, nursing staff, and doctors, and learning how to communicate to get the most effective outcome. Also many nursing skills, including injections, venipuncture, medications and becoming competent in performing obs, writing nursing notes, yes placements are very valuable.

Nursing is one of the most rewarding occupations, having the ability to work with people and help them in any way we can.
