I
studied pharmacy as I saw it as a career option with a bright future
while offering the opportunity to promote better health outcomes in the
community. UniSA offered a renowned and well-developed Pharmacy program
in a State which is conducive to studying.
What I enjoyed most about studying at UniSA was that I was given the
opportunity to develop myself both professionally and personally through
a variety of academic and extra-curricular activities.
UniSA teaching staff were very supportive and took a keen interest in my
professional development. They ensured that I was comfortable with my
university experience and provided continuous guidance throughout my
degree. In addition, they encouraged student feedback and ensured that
student input played a role in the development and improvement of
courses.
Teaching facilities at UniSA were well-developed to suit the academic
needs of students. From state-of-the-art computer barns to fully
equipped laboratories, UniSA showed a strong desire to remain at the
forefront of technology.
The highlight of my time at UniSA was completing my degree with a strong
academic standing despite being involved in a myriad of activities; in
particular as President of the UniSA Students Association for two years.
These activities brightened my UniSA experience and helped me develop
skills that fully complement those that are required in my academic
field.
Students were required to complete 200 hours of work experience in a
pharmacy outside of university hours. In addition, two month-long
placements in community, rural or hospital pharmacy settings formed part
of the final year of the program.
The experience I had from these placements enriched my understanding of
pharmacy practice and provided me with the opportunity to put into
practice what I learnt in the classroom. Certain concepts could not
reasonably be taught in the classroom and these placements filled this
gap in my knowledge. This allowed me to have a clear view of the range
of career opportunities available for me upon completion of my degree
and helped me make a decision on my career path.
I am currently employed but hope in the future to be able to directly
contribute to the development of pharmacy as a profession through
various professional organisations. My UniSA experience gives me the
confidence to be a future leader in the pharmacy profession.
This area of study is important as it allows me to actively contribute
to the well-being of the community while optimising local and
international health outcomes; something of tremendous importance all
over the world. Important to becoming a leader in this field is having a
passion for making a positive difference in the community, always
striving for professional development and the realisation that an
effort, no matter how small, makes a difference.
