Georgina West (Human Movement and Health Studies / Education)

I chose to study this program as I want to be a health PE teacher. The program is designed to equip students with the skills and qualities needed to be a good teacher so the degree is an awesome qualification as it allows you to start your career as soon as you graduate. What I like most is that they incorporate practical teaching experiences into the degree so you get a feel for what you’ll end up doing.

I chose to study at UniSA because of the flexibility and support they offered me with sporting commitments. The teaching staff are committed to students so often the standard of learning is high.

The uni aims to put students into a range of suitable working environments as soon as possible, which really gave me ideas about what’s out there and has helped me to decide what I want to achieve.

The highlights of my time at UniSA have been the people and I’ve really loved being able to explore areas of South Australia through Outdoor Education – we’ve been hiking in the Flinders and kayaking in the Coorong which was awesome.

I have, in the last year, undertaken a field study coaching year three basketball which was great fun and really rewarding. I’ve also done some prac teaching over a two week period at senior school level and I enjoyed everything I did. The experience was massive, I was able to go on a Kayak camp then take the kids out surfing whilst I also had the opportunity to take some classes in health with a mentoring teacher with me for the week.

I think that doing is different to knowing: especially with teaching, you have to find ways of organising and imparting what you know through effective teaching method and the kids have to be engaged and have fun. A lot of the time I found the teachers around me did very little and got the kids to do heaps, which was probably the best thing I picked up.

When I graduate I hope to get a job in a school with good teachers so that I can continue to develop and gain in practical experience.

This area of study is important to me because I love sport: the confidence, independence and freedom it can give to people, and I’m passionate about the health of young people.
