Connie Panagopoulos (Bachelor of Nursing)

I chose to study nursing as I wanted employment diversity and enjoy working with people, especially in a way that would support and enhance their physical and mental well being. I chose UniSA as it’s very convenient and came recommended by previous graduates.

The teaching staff at UniSA were of a high standard, always available to offer feedback and counselling in regards to my learning. The highlights of my time at UniSA were meeting a diverse range of students and the clinical placements.

During my time at UniSA I took a number of clinical placements. These included the Flinders Medical Centre in Peri operative Services during 2nd year and Gawler Health Service, Community Services in 3rd year. Being able to put theory to practice, especially at the FMC – I learned advanced life support for the unconscious patient, skills that cannot be learned in a classroom.

The nursing laboratories at UniSA were conducive to learning as the machines and instruments that I would encounter in the clinical field were provided in these labs.

I am currently undertaking my General Nurse Practice year at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, then hoping to gain employment in Community Nursing. Primary Health Care gives nurses the opportunity to make a positive difference to patient health, regardless of their health status, in order to empower them to initiate changes for healthier living. To be a leader in this field I believe you need initiative, advocacy, hard work and exceptional communication skills.
