A
career in medical science appealed to me, and I decided on pharmacy due
to the diverse range of career opportunities available in community,
hospital, academia and industry. I was keen to continue studying in
South Australia, and UniSA provided me with that opportunity.
What I enjoyed most about studying at UniSA were the small tutorial
groups, they allowed me to form close friendships with other students
which promoted discussion and facilitated learning. The diverse
assessment methods employed also encouraged me to develop a broad range
of skills.
UniSA staff displayed a genuine interest in student progression, and
were keen to assist with any enquiries. They were dedicated and
passionate towards their teaching, which encouraged you to perform at
your best and reach your full potential.
I feel that my involvement in the South Australian Pharmacy Students’
Association (SAPSA) throughout the four years of my degree was a
highlight of my time at UniSA and allowed me to develop communication
skills and gain life experience. SAPSA provided the opportunity to meet
other pharmacy students from across Australia as well as gaining
contacts within the pharmaceutical industry, which encouraged me to
develop valuable leadership skills.
During my degree I undertook 200 hours work experience at the Women’s
and Children’s Hospital, North Adelaide as well as University placements
at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and a community pharmacy. These
opportunities allowed me to supplement the knowledge gained at
university with a “real-world” perspective. Placements provided a chance
to gain valuable life experience in dealing with people, which I feel
makes you better prepared for the workforce. Undertaking placements
across a variety of pharmacy settings helped me decide which direction I
wanted to go after completing my degree.
The pharmacy laboratory facilities on-campus were well-equipped for
practical work. The model pharmacy allowed students to enhance their
skills by role-playing pharmacy practice scenarios.
At this stage I plan to gain experience in community pharmacy to broaden
my knowledge and skills. I also hope to become accredited to conduct
Medication Management Reviews in the near future, as I believe they are
a valuable service that pharmacists can provide to the community. I feel
that involvement with professional societies is important, as it allows
you to play an active role in guiding the future of the pharmacy
profession.
After having the opportunity to conduct an honours project examining the
treatment experiences of children and adolescents with Attention-Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder, I am also considering continuing further study
in this area.
Pharmacy is an area of importance to me because I believe pharmacists
have an important role to play in promoting and improving the health of
the community. To be a leader in this field I believe you need a sound
knowledge base from university maintained with continuing education, as
well as dedication and motivation to succeed.
