Advanced Community Care Scholarship

The Advanced Community Care Association (ACCA) was formed to promote and implement safe alternatives to unnecessary hospitalisation, working with non-government organisations providing aged care and other community services, to achieve the following “objects”

Following the dissolution of ACCA in late 2006, the Board of ACCA resolved to endow a full PhD scholarship at the University of South Australia, in fields related to the objects of the association.

To be eligible for the Advanced Community Care scholarship, an applicant must enrol to commence their studies as a full-time student in the Division of Health Sciences at the University of South Australia in 2008.

The scholarship will be awarded for a 3-year period with an additional 6-month extension by negotiation. The successful applicant must not be currently enrolled in a PhD program or have been previously enrolled for a research degree, and must be eligible for the Research Training Scheme.

The scholarship will be equivalent to the value of an Australian Postgraduate Award, as determined by DEST, and will be indexed annually in line with DEST determinations. In 2007, an APA stipend was valued at $19,616.   In addition, the successful recipient will receive a Division of Health Sciences research scholarship top-up of $6,000 per annum.

Applications will be made as part of the University of South Australia’s annual scholarship application process, and the successful applicant will be selected on the basis of merit and the alignment of their proposed research project with the objects of ACCA, subject to the approval of a representative of the ACCA Board.

SA Department of Health SAHMRAC Awards 2008

The South Australian Department of Health has made funding available through the South Australian Health and Medical Research Advisory Council (SAHMRAC) program to fund PhD scholarship positions in 2008. The scholarships are valued at approximately $26,000 per annum for three years.

Applicants will be selected on the basis of merit and the alignment of their proposed program of research with the Strategic Plan Health Targets and the areas of research strength of UniSA relevant to the Department. Specifically, funding will be available for at least one scholarship linked to the South Australia Strategic Plan Health Targets Objective 2: Improving Wellbeing and Objective 6: Expanding Opportunity, as follows:

Smoking Reduce the percentage of young cigarette smokers by 10 percentage points between 2004 and 2014.
Healthy weight Increase the proportion of South Australians aged 18 and over with healthy weight by 10 percentage points by 2014.
Healthy South Australians Increase healthy life expectancy of South Australians by 5 percentage points for males and 3 percentage points for females by 2014.
Aboriginal healthy life expectancy Lower the morbidity and mortality rates of Aboriginal South Australians.
Chronic disease Increase by 5 percentage points, the proportion of people living with chronic disease, whose self-assessed health status is good or better.
Psychological wellbeing Equal or lower than the Australian average for psychological distress by 2014.
Early Childhood: Birthweight Reduce the proportion of low birthweight babies.


In addition, one scholarship will be directly linked to the research strengths of the University in an area that is also relevant to the Department. Research proposals may:

The Department of Health will fund the costs included in the standard Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) conditions with the exception of a relocation allowance and thesis allowance. In 2007, the APA stipend was set at $19,616.  In addition, the successful recipient will receive a Division of Health Sciences research scholarship top-up of $6,000 per annum.

Scholarship recipients will be expected to commence study in early 2008.
