Scheme overview:
The Australian Rotary Health Research Foundation offers scholarships to PhD
students anywhere in Australia investigating research in a variety of health
areas. The annual value of these scholarships is $25,000 and it is intended
that these scholarships will provide salary and incidental support for a
postgraduate student undertaking full-time research in one of the funded
areas.
In general, applicants for scholarships through the ARHRF must meet the
following conditions:
- be about to commence in their first year of a PhD;
- be FULL-TIME students not be receiving an additional scholarship;
- be an Australian citizen or have Permanent Resident Status and not be under bond to any foreign government and are to provide, where appropriate, evidence of resident status;
- not be enrolled in a combined degree program.
- The award will be made for one year in the first instance but can be extended for a maximum of three and a half years upon receipt of satisfactory annual progress reports. Additional salaried work must not exceed NH&MRC guidelines.

Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia (MSRA) Scholarships
Scheme overview:
The MSRA Postgraduate and Summer Scholarships support MS
researchers across Australia and are awards made in support of either a pure
research or social science/applied project within an Australian institution
proposed by an appropriately qualified investigator. The projects are to be
consistent with the aim of MSRA and the work is to be approved by the host
institution (including relevant ethics committees). Researchers who are
based overseas for the duration of the grant are not eligible to apply.
The Postgraduate Scholarships will provide $26,000 per annum (in line with
NHMRC) for a period of 3 years. The Summer Vacation Scholarships will be
made for 8 weeks, providing the applicant with $500 per week.

Postgraduate Scholarships
Scheme overview:
The aim of the NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarships scheme is to support
outstanding Australian health and medical graduates early in their career so
that they can be trained to conduct research that is internationally
competitive and develop a capacity for original independent research.
Categories of Awards:

Funding:
Grant Review Panels (GRPs) will determine budgets and make recommendations.
The Minister will determine the number of grants funded and the level of
funding allocated to a grant.
Scholarships are awarded for a maximum period of three years, if initial postgraduate degree enrolment is concurrent with commencement of the scholarship.
Successful applicants already enrolled for the postgraduate degree prior to the commencement of a scholarship will have the maximum period reduced by the equivalent period of study undertaken prior to commencement of the scholarship.
Eligibility:
- be an Australian citizen or permanent resident or New Zealand citizen holding a Special Category Visa and;
- have made prior arrangements with the Head of Department or Institution in which they propose to study. The administering institution nominated must be an NHMRC registered Administering Institution within Australia.
Reasons for ineligibility to apply include, but are not restricted to, the following:
- applicants in the final year of an honours degree; and
- applicants already in receipt of an Australian Postgraduate Award or equivalent Australian Government funded scholarship.

Fulbright Scholarships
As the largest and one of the most prestigious educational scholarship
programs in the world, Fulbright provides unique opportunities for
Australians to build long term research collaboration and linkages with U.S.
universities.
Applications are open to Postgraduates (to do research related to their
Australian PhD., or enrol in a U.S. degree); Postdoctoral, Professional and
Senior Scholars from any field of study. Applicants from Queensland,
Tasmania, Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria
are encouraged to consider the state specific Fulbright Scholarships that
have now been established.
Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarships:
Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarships are available to Australian citizens to
engage in 8 - 12 months of research relevant to an Australian PhD; or
undertake an approved course of study in an American higher degree or its
equivalent.
These scholarships are intended for:
- current PhD students
- honours students
- honours graduates who are considering postgraduate study in the U.S.
Postgraduate Scholarship Benefits:
- Travel entitlement of A$4,985
- Stipend of US$2,281 per month for a maximum of 12 months
- Establishment allowance of US$2000.
Duration:
- Fulbright Postgraduate Scholars must spend a minimum of one academic year (8-12 months) in the U.S., the majority of time should be at their host institution.

Senior Scholarship Benefits:
- Travel allowance of A$3,904
- Dependants travel allowance of A$3,471
- Stipend of US$3,018 per month for a maximum of 6 months
- Dependants stipend of US$185 per month for a maximum of 6 months
- Establishment allowance of US$550.
Duration:
- Fulbright funding is for a maximum of six months only and applicants must demonstrate they have sufficient additional funds to support themselves and any dependants during their stay in the U.S.

Fulbright Professional Scholarships:

- junior to middle level academics whose professional focus is industry related and whose research and sharing of results within the industry is clearly outlined.
As a guideline, Professional Scholars are generally aged between 30-45
years. The Professional Scholarship does not fund postgraduate (i.e. Masters
or PhD) study programs.
Professional Scholarship Benefit:
Payment of A$26,000, which covers travel and living expenses.
Duration:
Fulbright Professional Scholarships are for a minimum of three and maximum
of four months.

Heart Foundation Postgraduate Scholarships
Scheme overview:
The Heart Foundation offers Postgraduate Scholarships in biomedical,
clinical and public health disciplines. These scholarships are for nursing,
medical, science and other relevant graduates seeking support for full-time
or part-time research studies leading to a PhD or MD (Doctor of
Medicine/Medicine Doctor) at an Australian university or institution.
Scholarships are awarded for research in cardiovascular disease and related
disorders.
The applicant would be eligible for funding if they fulfil any one of the following criteria:
- Citizen of Australia or New Zealand
- Permanent resident of Australia
- Submitted their application to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) for a permanent residence or Special Category Visa but have not yet received the visa. (Evidence of the visa applied for being granted is required prior to funding being released to the scholar’s research institute/start of award).
Co-funded awards:
The Heart Foundation and the National Stroke Foundation are partnering to
offer funding for Postgraduate Scholarships for research into the
prevention, causes, diagnosis, treatment and long term support for stroke.
If you are pursuing research into Stroke and CVD and would like to be
considered for a co-funded award with the Stroke Foundation, you will need
to include a 1 page attachment demonstrating how your research is relevant
to Stroke and CVD.
- Scholarships will only be awarded to postgraduate students to support study towards a PhD
- Awards are payable for up to three years for a Scholarship
- Part-time applicants will be considered.

Kidney Health Australia (KHA) Biomedical Research Scholarships
Scheme overview:
Kidney Health Australia provides scholarships for individuals wishing to
study full time for the research degrees of PhD or MD and Masters by
research. Research must be undertaken into the causes, prevention and
treatment of disorders of the kidney.
The amount of the scholarship stipend will range from $28,000 (Science) to
$33,000 (Medical), depending on the qualifications the applicant holds and
duration of study, for a period of up to 2 years for a Masters by Research,
and up to 3 years for a PhD degree. Funding is awarded annually for the
duration of the scholarship, but application for NHMRC (or other) funding is
strongly encouraged.
Eligibility criteria:
- Preference will be given to Australian applicants enrolled in Australian universities
- Part-time students are not eligible
- Recipients may undertake additional paid work to supplement their scholarship stipend provided that their full-time student status is not compromised
- Applicants should have graduated, or be proposing to graduate in the current academic year.

Kidney Health Australia (KHA) Summer Vacation Scholarship
Scheme overview:
Kidney Health Australia provides scholarships for undergraduate students who
wish to spend their summer vacation undertaking a supervised research
project related to the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the
kidneys and urinary tract.
The amount of the scholarship stipend is $1200. The award is made available
at the end of the project after a satisfactory report on the outcome has
been received.
Eligibility criteria:
- Preference will be given to Australian applicants enrolled in Australian universities. If funds permit, consideration may be given to supporting overseas applicants enrolled at Australian universities, or Australian applicants enrolled at overseas universities

Kidney Health Australia Nursing Scholarship
Scheme overview:
Kidney Health Australia provides grants for Registered Nurses wishing to
study for a Masters Degree in Nursing and higher levels of study. The aim of
the program is to encourage nurses to pursue a career in renal nursing, in
any of its components - clinical practice, education or research - across
the continuum of chronic kidney disease from prevention to early detection
to renal replacement.
The amount of the grant will be up to $3,000 per year for a maximum period
of up to 3 years. The funding is awarded annually for the duration of the
Award but funding in the 2nd and 3rd year is dependent on Kidney Health
Australia receiving evidence of satisfactory annual progress from the
relevant university. Funding may be provided to those already enrolled in
one of the above courses.

use their Masters degree in the general area of renal nursing

Heart Foundation Summer Scholarships
Scheme overview:
The National Heart Foundation of Australia offers Summer Scholarships to
provide undergraduates with an opportunity to participate in biomedical,
clinical or public health research projects which are broadly related to
cardiovascular function and disease.
The scholarships are offered for a period of six to eight weeks (valued up
to $2000) and the projects are to be carried out during the summer vacation.
Eligibility criteria:
- Projects are to be carried out in universities, attached hospitals or research institutes that provide appropriate facilities, and projects are to be supervised by an appropriate researcher or clinician.
- Summer Scholarships are open to Australian citizens or permanent residents.
- Applicants must be based in Australia.

Cancer Council SA Student Vacation Scholarships
Scheme overview:
Cancer Council SA offers vacation scholarships to undergraduates interested
in participating in research projects directly related to cancer. These
scholarships are tenable for up to eight weeks at $200 per week and will be
available during the summer holiday period in recognised research
institutions in South Australia. The scholarships are intended to encourage
the interest of students in research and to measure their research skills.
Eligibility:
- Scholarships are open to University undergraduates who are enrolled in any Faculty and who have completed at least 2 years of their course at the time the scholarship commences.
- Only one application per student is permitted and scholarships are only awarded for study at South Australian institutions.
- The scholarship project needs to be part of a cancer research program being conducted at a university or other research organisation within South Australia.
- If a student accepts an offer of another student vacation scholarship, this will preclude that applicant from a Cancer Council scholarship.

Leukaemia Foundation PhD Scholarships
Scheme overview:
The Foundation's scholarships program aims to encourage talented young
students, medical graduates and researchers to pursue a career in basic,
applied or translational research to find cures and better ways to care for
patients and families living with haematological malignancies.
Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the
institution in which the proposed study will be done. Scholarships are open
to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year
of full-time study toward their PhD. Successful applicants who have already
commenced their PhD program will only be awarded this scholarship for the
balance of their study.
PhD scholarships will initially be awarded for a maximum of three years
($40,000 pa - $30,000 stipend + $10,000 consumables).
Eligibility:
- The field of study must be in accordance with the objectives of the Foundation, namely research into the causes, prevention, treatments or cure of leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood and bone marrow cancers.
- The study or research must be full-time and must be undertaken in an appropriate Institution in Australia with an accredited program.
- All applicants must be:
- Australian citizens;
- permanent residents; or
- New Zealand citizens holding a Special Category Visa.

Leukaemia Foundation PhD Scholarships (Clinical)
Scheme overview:
The Foundation's scholarships program aims to encourage talented young
students, medical graduates and researchers to pursue a career in basic,
applied or translational research to find cures and better ways to care for
patients and families living with haematological malignancies.
Candidates will be expected to have completed, or almost completed, their
advanced medical training in haematology. The scholarship is intended to
assist in the conduct of research in the field of malignant haematology.
Those who have completed, or are entering the final year, of their advanced
medical training and wish to undertake a PhD in clinical or laboratory
science research in haematology are encouraged to apply for a clinical
scholarship.
Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the
institution in which the proposed study will be done. Scholarships are open
to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year
of full-time study toward their PhD. Successful applicants who have already
commenced their PhD program will only be awarded this Scholarship for the
balance of their study.
PhD scholarships (Clinical) will initially be awarded for a maximum of three
years ($55,000 pa - $45,000 stipend + $10,000 consumables).
Eligibility:
- The field of study must be in accordance with the objectives of the Foundation, namely research into the causes, prevention, treatments or cure of leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood and bone marrow cancers.

Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC)
Scheme overview:
RIRDC awards post-graduate scholarships to foster research training in
disciplines that contribute to the Corporation's
research priorities and
successful applicants are likely to be those with a strong focus on RIRDC's
priorities and who will contribute to innovation for Australia's rural
industries.
Scholarships are tenable for up to three years study at an Australian
University (PhD 3 years, Masters degree 2 years) and carry a living
allowance (up to $26,000). Funding is also available for the host
institution, to cover the student's non-capital maintenance expenses.
Eligibility:
Scholarships are open to Australian citizens and permanent residents holding
an honours degree or equivalent in an appropriate discipline. Applications
from mature age students with experience in rural industry are invited.
