Australia Fellowships
Scheme overview:
The Australia Fellowship scheme is designed for outstanding senior
health and medical researchers across all disciplines. It is valued at
$800,000 per annum for five years, and applications are invited from leading
researchers both within Australia and from around the world.
The Australia Fellowship Scheme operates a two-stage application process:

The Fellowship Awards provide support for experienced researchers to
undertake research that is both of major importance in its field and of
benefit to Australian health.
Scheme overview:
NHMRC Research Fellowships are full-time research appointments, providing
opportunities for outstanding biomedical and health researchers with proven
research track records to undertake research of significant benefit to the
health of Australians. Opportunities exist for applicants in biomedical,
clinical and population health research.
Research Fellowship:
- Appointments are for 5 years. There is no limit to the number of times a Fellowship recipient may apply for re-appointment at the end of the appointment period
- Recipients may apply for promotion within the 5-year period, or at the same time as a re-appointment application
- Applicants must indicate the level of appointment for which they are applying. The Fellowships are valued as follows (2010 package rates; includes salary, on-costs and travel and will be indexed annually ):
Senior Research Fellow Level A: $112,000
Senior Research Fellow Level B: $123,750
Principal Research Fellow: 135,500
Senior Principal Research Fellow: $153,250
- Part-time appointments may be considered in exceptional circumstances

Fellowship Awards
The Fellowship Awards provide support for experienced researchers to
undertake research that is both of major importance in its field and of
benefit to Australian health.
Scheme overview:
This scheme is targeted at active clinicians and public health practitioners
to undertake research linked to their practice and policy. It is not
designed to support applicants who are already established as scientists.
Applicants will have undertaken a successful research project which they may
wish to develop to a nationally- or internationally-competitive level, but
wish to maintain both a research and professional career.
Practitioner Fellowships are awarded in one of two levels (full-time equivalent value):
- Level 1: $120,250
- Level 2: $144,250
The value of the award includes salary, on-costs and a travel allowance,
and is indexed annually. The total package value will be pro-rated between
0.3 and 0.7 full-time equivalent, depending on the specified portion of time
agreed to by the applicant’s employer in the application.

Career Development Awards (CDAs)
Scheme overview:
The Career Development Award Scheme is open to researchers in the early
stages of their careers, and awards are made for 4 years. Successful
applicants will be undertaking research that is internationally competitive;
will develop their capacity for independent research; will develop their
research leadership skills; and will help the researcher establish
themselves as an independent and self directed health and medical researcher
in a research program, or as part of a research team.
Career Development Awards are accepted from applicants in one of two levels:
- CDA Level 1: 2-7 years post-doctoral experience
Value: $94,250 (2010 full time rate; includes salary, on-costs, travel and maintenance) - CDA Level 2: 7-12 years post-doctoral experience
Value: $104,250 (2010 full time rate; includes salary, on-costs, travel and maintenance)
Career Development Awards are accepted in the following areas:
- Biomedical CDAs
Available for biomedical research. These are full-time awards and researchers are normally expected to be working full-time on the development of their research career during the term of the award. - Clinical CDAs
Clinical applicants must demonstrate medical, paramedical, allied health or public health professional experience. Applicants may be full or part-time (part-time awards are available for 30-70% of a full-time position and the award value is pro-rated accordingly).
Part-time awards are designed for applicants who wish to maintain an active clinical role and continue to provide clinical care, and applicants must demonstrate the interface between their clinical duties and their research. - Population Health CDAs
Population Health awards are for research into public health and health service delivery. Applicants may be full or part-time (part-time awards are available for 30-70% of a full-time position and the award value is pro-rated accordingly.
Part-time awards are for researchers who wish to maintain an active role in the delivery of public health services or the development of public health policy, and applicants must demonstrate the interface between their public health or policy development work and their research - Industry CDAs
Industry awards are full-time, and are intended to support researchers with a commercial interest to spend intermittent (up to 50%) time in industry (within Australia or overseas). The residual proportion is to be spent at a research institution within Australia.
The awards are designed to support development work undertaken in a field related to human health. Examples may include diagnostics, pharmaceutical product development, bioinformatics, manufacturing technologies etc. The applicant needs to demonstrate clear engagement with industry.
Career Development applicants may also apply for a Partnership award
- Partnership CDAs
Partnership Awards are offered through funding partnerships agreed between the NHMRC and each partner organisations. In 2008, partner organisations included the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, Diabetes Australia, the National Heart Foundation of Australia, Kidney Health Australia and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia

Scheme overview:
The National Institute of Clinical Studies (NICS) is an institute of the
NHMRC. It established a Fellowship program in 2003, to provide future
leaders in Australian health care to develop their knowledge and expertise
in closing the gaps between evidence and practice. Successful applicants
will design and execute an implementation program aimed at improving
practical outcomes for patients by increasing the uptake of high quality
research evidence in a particular health care setting. NICS Fellowships may
be awarded in conjunction with a partner organisation.
NICS Fellowships are half-time and are awarded for 2 years.

Training (Post-doctoral) Fellowships
Scheme overview:
Training (Post-doctoral) Fellowships provide opportunities for outstanding
Australian researchers, who wish to make research a significant component of
their research career. Applications are considered in a number of
categories. Training fellowships are awarded for 4 years.
Training Fellowships are valued at $66,250 (2010 full-time rate, includes
salary on-costs) plus a $5,000 annual maintenance allowance.
In general, eligibility and award conditions and value are consistent for
each award. However applicants are advised to check the funding policy, and
any appendices which may relate to individual awards. Additional loadings
for clinical qualifications and allowances may apply depending on the award
and/or applicant’s prior qualifications.

South Australian Cardiovascular Research Network Fellowships
Scheme overview:
The Heart Foundation has partnered with SA Health to fund cardiovascular
research projects in South Australia to the value of $5million over the next
7 years. As part of the South Australian Cardiovascular Research Development
Program (SACVRDP), two Research Fellowships are to be offered in 2009 (a
total of 4 will be offered over the life of the program) to early career
researchers undertaking high quality clinical or population health research
which is relevant to heart, stroke and blood vessel disease.
The Research Fellowships:
- will be open to Australian citizens or permanent residents
- may be applied for on a full or part-time basis
- have a tenure of 3 years, and are non-renewable
- are open to applicants who are 3-10 years post- PhD or MD and can demonstrate spending at least 3 years actively contributing to cardiovascular research in Australia. Suitable interstate and international applicants will also be considered however must demonstrate a clear intention to reside and develop their careers in South Australia
- are valued at $150,000 per annum (comprising $90,000 salary support
and $60,000 project support for the research program as outlined in the
application).

Overseas Research Fellowships:
- Are valued at $66,250 (2010 full-time rate, pro-rated for part-time recipients; including on-costs). Additional salary loadings apply to recipients with registered medical qualifications
- Allowances are also funded as follows (all values based on full-time
award):
- An annual maintenance allowance of $5,000
- Accommodation allowance
- Cost of living allowance
- Minimum cost airfares (by reimbursement) for direct travel to and return from the overseas centre on one occasion in each direction.
- Are tenable for 3 years, with the first two years to be spent overseas and the final year to be spent in Australia

- Must have been awarded their PhD or MD within the last 24 months prior to the application closing date

Scheme overview:
The Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government’s internationally
competitive, merit-based scholarship program providing opportunities for
citizens of the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe and the Americas to
undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. Awards
are also available for Australians to do the same abroad.
The Endeavour Research Fellowships program is currently seeking applications
from Australian and Australian Indigenous applicants:
- The Endeavour Research Fellowships make provision for postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows from Australia (i.e. citizens or permanent residents) to undertake short-term research (4-6 months), in any field of study, in participating countries in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions
- They are government-funded, so an important secondary objective is to strengthen bilateral ties and international research linkages
- Up to 90 research fellowships are available for 2009; awards have a total value of up to $23,500 (partitioned between travel, establishment and monthly stipend; travel and health insurance also provided)

Centre for Intergenerational Health Early to Mid Career Research Fellowships
Scheme overview:
The Centre for Intergenerational Health is a Centre of Excellence and major
research collaboration between the University of Adelaide, University of
South Australia, Flinders University, SA Health and the Department of
Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology (DFEEST).
In 2009, the Centre is offering 3 Early to Mid Career Postdoctoral Research
Fellowships, aimed at attracting and retaining the finest research minds to
South Australia to work in the area of intergenerational health.
Applicants will hold a doctoral or equivalent degree, preferably in the
areas of biomedical or health sciences, public health, policy
translation/development, or relevant specialist training. Applicants will be
no more than 5 years postdoctoral (if relevant, applicants over the 5-year
limit may submit a letter with their application addressing “career
interruptions” for consideration).
Successful recipients will be employed through one of the 3 collaborating
Universities, depending on their particular research interest. Certification
from the intended host University must be attached to the application.

Alzheimer's Australia Research (AAR) Postdoctoral Fellowships in Dementia
Scheme overview:
Alzheimer's Australia Research (AAR) has announced the 2009 Dementia Grants
Program for funding in 2010. The AAR Postdoctoral Fellowships in Dementia
support PhD graduates undertaking research in an area related to dementia.
In 2009, three fellowships will be offered.
Applications must be submitted internally to the Business Development
Manager in your area.
- Fellowships are awarded in both biological/non-clinical and clinical/psychosocial research areas
- The fellowships are worth $45,000 per annum each for two years, on condition that the applicants’ institution matches this annual sum
- The applicant must have been awarded a PhD or equivalent degree in the last 3 years (or notified of success of their application for) and have the support of an Australian Tertiary Institution or Australian Medical Research Institute to carry out the proposed research

L'OREAL Australia For Women In Science Fellowships
Scheme overview:
There are three $20,000 Fellowships available. These are awarded to women
who have shown scientific excellence in their career to date and who have an
appropriate research plan that will be assisted by the one-year Fellowship.
The Fellowship funding can be used in a fairly discretionary fashion, once
it supports the research plan.
Applicants:
- must be women involved in the life sciences, material sciences, physical sciences, mathematics or engineering
- must be post-doctoral researchers who have completed their PhD since 4 May 2004 (NB: excluding maternity leave and periods of part time work due to family considerations)
- must be Australian citizens or permanent residents, temporary residents in the process of applying for permanent residency may apply but decisions of eligibility will be left to the discretion of the jury

The Sylvia And Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation
Senior Medical Research Fellowship
Scheme overview:
This is a five-year Senior Medical Research Fellowship and is awarded
annually to outstanding researchers. It is valued at $195,000 per annum
(total award value $975,000). The Fellowship is an integral part of a
scheme that is intended to provide both salary and project grant support
for outstanding Australian medical researchers.
Eligibility for a Senior Medical Research Fellowship will require the
following:
- The applicant is medically or scientifically qualified to at least the postdoctoral level
- The applicant has been working at a postdoctoral level for less than ten (10) years (doctorate received after 1 January 1999) and does not currently hold a senior research or teaching position. The Medical Advisory Board and the Trustees reserve the right to take into consideration exceptional circumstances during the ten (10) year period. You must provide proof of your research doctorate award from your University
- The applicant is sponsored to undertake the Fellowship research in an Australian institution
- The applicant is an Australian national or permanent resident.

Clinical Investigatorships
Scheme overview:
Establishment grants for Clinical Investigators have been initiated by
the Foundation in order to stimulate and encourage clinical research in
Australia. In particular the grants are intended to assist new
investigators to establish their research programs at the time of the
difficult transition from doctoral and post-doctoral training posts to
their first definitive clinical positions in an academic environment.
Clinical Investigators will be awarded a once only grant of $60,000.
Eligibility for a Clinical Investigatorship requires the following:
- The applicant should be a medical graduate or a graduate of another clinical discipline with a definitive clinical appointment
- Consideration will be given only to those applicants with a fulltime appointment
- The applicant should be actively engaged in clinical research
- The applicant should be working in a University clinical department, a teaching hospital, a clinical research unit in a research institute or in an academic general practice setting
- The applicant should have been appointed to such a position but have been in the position for no more than 24 months on 1 May of the year of application. Unsuccessful applicants may re-apply the year following.

Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia (MSRA) Fellowships
MSRA Postdoctoral Fellowships
Scheme overview:
The MSRA Postdoctoral Fellowships support MS researchers across
Australia and is an award made in support of either a pure research or
social science/applied project within an Australian institution proposed
by an appropriately qualified investigator. The project is to be
consistent with the aim of MSRA and the work is to be approved by the

Scheme overview:
The MSRA Senior Fellowship award is available to Researchers and Practitioners and aims to supplement the income of scientific, medical, applied or social sciences specialists who have undertaken a successful research program and wish to continue at nationally or internationally competitive levels. Candidates are expected to be future leaders in MS research and have to already establish a verifiable track record.
The fellowship provides salary support in order that existing and future efforts research can continue. The fellowship is awarded in the context of a proven track record and quality and likelihood of achieving the research aims. It provides financial support to allow the applicant to continue the field of MS research.
The funds provided by MSRA for Senior Research Fellows will be up to $100,000 per annum and up to $1200, 000 per annum for Senior Clinical Research Fellows. The Senior Fellowship is of five years’ duration from the day of acceptance

Pfizer Australia awards Research Fellowships each year to outstanding biomedical scientists wishing to establish a research career in Australia.
Each Fellowship provides a 5-year grant covering salary, travel and other establishment costs and are valued at up to AUD$1million. The Fellowships are designed to support a specific research program to be conducted by the applicant, primarily within an Australian research centre.
The grant offers support to the individual at the level of Senior Lecturer, or occasionally, Reader salary range, with remaining funds used for other research related costs.

The objectives of the research and professional education program are to
support specific research projects into arthritis and other musculoskeletal
disorders as well as to support and advance the career development of

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Advanced Post Doctoral Fellowships
Scheme overview:
The Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship program is designed to:
- attract qualified and promising health scientists
- to provide an opportunity to receive full time research training
- assist the individuals in transitioning from a fellowship to an independent (faculty-level) position.
The award is for a period of 3 years and during the fellowship phase, the

The MND Research Institute invites applications for this prestigious
research Fellowship for motor neurone disease research in Australia. The
Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship is directed towards postdoctoral
scientists with a track record of research in the areas of neuroscience
related to motor neurone disease. Salary for a full-time research fellow
will be funded at $72,500 p.a. for a period of up to three years.
