Australia Fellowships

Scheme overview:
The Australia Fellowship scheme is designed for outstanding senior health and medical researchers across all disciplines. It is valued at $800,000 per annum for five years, and applications are invited from leading researchers both within Australia and from around the world.

The Australia Fellowship Scheme operates a two-stage application process:
Stage 1: Submission of an Expression of Interest
Stage 2: Call for Full Applications from short-listed applicants

Research Fellowships

Scheme overview:
NHMRC Research Fellowships are full-time research appointments, providing opportunities for outstanding biomedical and health researchers with proven research track records to undertake research of significant benefit to the health of Australians. Opportunities exist for applicants in biomedical, clinical and population health research.

Practitioner Fellowships

Scheme overview:
This scheme is targeted at active clinicians and public health practitioners to undertake research linked to their practice and policy. It is not designed to support applicants who are already established as scientists. Applicants will have undertaken a successful research project which they may wish to develop to a nationally- or internationally-competitive level, but wish to maintain both a research and professional career.

Practitioner Fellowships are awarded in one of two levels (full-time equivalent value):

The value of the award includes salary, on-costs and a travel allowance, and is indexed annually. The total package value will be pro-rated between 0.3 and 0.7 full-time equivalent, depending on the specified portion of time agreed to by the applicant’s employer in the application.

Career Development Awards (CDAs)

Scheme overview:
The Career Development Award Scheme is open to researchers in the early stages of their careers, and awards are made for 4 years. Successful applicants will be undertaking research that is internationally competitive; will develop their capacity for independent research; will develop their research leadership skills; and will help the researcher establish themselves as an independent and self directed health and medical researcher in a research program, or as part of a research team.

Career Development Awards are accepted from applicants in one of two levels:

National Institute of Clinical Studies (NICS) Fellowships

Scheme overview:
The National Institute of Clinical Studies (NICS) is an institute of the NHMRC. It established a Fellowship program in 2003, to provide future leaders in Australian health care to develop their knowledge and expertise in closing the gaps between evidence and practice. Successful applicants will design and execute an implementation program aimed at improving practical outcomes for patients by increasing the uptake of high quality research evidence in a particular health care setting. NICS Fellowships may be awarded in conjunction with a partner organisation.

NICS Fellowships are half-time and are awarded for 2 years.

Training (Post-doctoral) Fellowships

Scheme overview:
Training (Post-doctoral) Fellowships provide opportunities for outstanding Australian researchers, who wish to make research a significant component of their research career. Applications are considered in a number of categories. Training fellowships are awarded for 4 years.

Training Fellowships are valued at $66,250 (2010 full-time rate, includes salary on-costs) plus a $5,000 annual maintenance allowance.

In general, eligibility and award conditions and value are consistent for each award. However applicants are advised to check the funding policy, and any appendices which may relate to individual awards. Additional loadings for clinical qualifications and allowances may apply depending on the award and/or applicant’s prior qualifications.

Heart Foundation South Australian Cardiovascular Research Networks Fellowships

The Heart Foundation offers a number of fellowships designed to provide support to researchers at the early to middle stages of their research careers.

South Australian Cardiovascular Research Network Fellowships

Scheme overview:
The Heart Foundation has partnered with SA Health to fund cardiovascular research projects in South Australia to the value of $5million over the next 7 years. As part of the South Australian Cardiovascular Research Development Program (SACVRDP), two Research Fellowships are to be offered in 2009 (a total of 4 will be offered over the life of the program) to early career researchers undertaking high quality clinical or population health research which is relevant to heart, stroke and blood vessel disease.

Centre for Intergenerational Health Early to Mid Career Research Fellowships

Scheme overview:
The Centre for Intergenerational Health is a Centre of Excellence and major research collaboration between the University of Adelaide, University of South Australia, Flinders University, SA Health and the Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology (DFEEST).

In 2009, the Centre is offering 3 Early to Mid Career Postdoctoral Research Fellowships, aimed at attracting and retaining the finest research minds to South Australia to work in the area of intergenerational health.

Applicants will hold a doctoral or equivalent degree, preferably in the areas of biomedical or health sciences, public health, policy translation/development, or relevant specialist training. Applicants will be no more than 5 years postdoctoral (if relevant, applicants over the 5-year limit may submit a letter with their application addressing “career interruptions” for consideration).

Successful recipients will be employed through one of the 3 collaborating Universities, depending on their particular research interest. Certification from the intended host University must be attached to the application.

Alzheimer's Australia Research (AAR) Postdoctoral Fellowships in Dementia

Scheme overview:
Alzheimer's Australia Research (AAR) has announced the 2009 Dementia Grants Program for funding in 2010. The AAR Postdoctoral Fellowships in Dementia support PhD graduates undertaking research in an area related to dementia. In 2009, three fellowships will be offered.

Scheme overview:
There are three $20,000 Fellowships available. Clinical Investigatorships
Scheme overview:

Establishment grants for Clinical Investigators have been initiated by the Foundation in order to stimulate and encourage clinical research in Australia. In particular the grants are intended to assist new investigators to establish their research programs at the time of the difficult transition from doctoral and post-doctoral training posts to their first definitive clinical positions in an academic environment. Clinical Investigators will be awarded a once only grant of $60,000.

Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia (MSRA) Fellowships

MSRA Postdoctoral Fellowships
Scheme overview:

The MSRA Postdoctoral Fellowships support MS researchers across Australia and is an award made in support of either a pure research or social science/applied project within an Australian institution proposed by an appropriately qualified investigator. The project is to be consistent with the aim of MSRA and the work is to be approved by the host institution (including relevant ethics committees). Researchers who are based overseas for the duration of the grant are not eligible to apply.

Since these awards will normally be made for a period of two years only, the purpose is primarily to assist investigations in which considerable progress can be expected over this or a shorter period. MSRA does not intend to provide long term salaries for support staff.

The fellowships will provide a salary plus on-costs for the duration of the award. The application form includes a budget proforma which must be completed detailing the applicants current salary and any projected increases for the life of the fellowship. Consumables may be considered but will need to be included in the itemised budget.

Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia (MSRA) Fellowships

MSRA Senior Fellowships
Scheme overview:

The MSRA Senior Fellowship award is available to Researchers and Practitioners and aims to supplement the income of scientific, medical, applied or social sciences specialists who have undertaken a successful research program and wish to continue at nationally or internationally competitive levels. Candidates are expected to be future leaders in MS research and have to already establish a verifiable track record.

The fellowship provides salary support in order that existing and future efforts research can continue. The fellowship is awarded in the context of a proven track record and quality and likelihood of achieving the research aims. It provides financial support to allow the applicant to continue the field of MS research.

The funds provided by MSRA for Senior Research Fellows will be up to $100,000 per annum and up to $1200, 000 per annum for Senior Clinical Research Fellows. The Senior Fellowship is of five years’ duration from the day of acceptance

Trish Foundation/Betty Cuthbert Postdoctoral Fellowships

Scheme overview:

Trish Multiple Sclerosis Research Foundation (Trish Foundation), in conjunction with Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia, is calling for applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship to enable young scientists with appropriate research experience to undertake independent research relevant to MS.

Fellowships, to be held in an Australian university or research institute with appropriate research facilities, will normally be awarded for two years, with the possibility of an extension for a third and final year. A fellowship will fund the salary, related on costs and may include a small sum for maintenance.

To be eligible, applicants must submit applications to both NHMRC and MSRA as these awards are jointly funded and only Australian citizens or permanent residents should apply.

Pfizer Australia Research Fellowships

Scheme overview:

Pfizer Australia awards Research Fellowships each year to outstanding biomedical scientists wishing to establish a research career in Australia.

Each Fellowship provides a 5-year grant covering salary, travel and other establishment costs and are valued at up to AUD$1million. The Fellowships are designed to support a specific research program to be conducted by the applicant, primarily within an Australian research centre.

The grant offers support to the individual at the level of Senior Lecturer, or occasionally, Reader salary range, with remaining funds used for other research related costs.

To be eligible to apply for a Fellowship, applicants should have a research-based doctoral degree in a scientific or medically related discipline, together with recognized post-doctoral achievements. Ideally the applicant should have less then 10 year's post doctoral experience.

Philip Desbrow Senior Research Fellowship
Scheme overview:

The Leukaemia Foundation invites expressions of interest for the Philip Desbrow Senior Research fellowship. This award will provide continued support for an exceptional young researcher preferably between 3 and 10 years post doctorate who has established an international reputation for research in the field of leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood cancers and disorders.

Researchers who are currently working within Australia will be expected to have spent less than two years in their current institution if they plan to apply for this Fellowship in the same location.

The Philip Desbrow Fellowship will provide $200,000 pa for 5 years.

Postdoctoral Fellowships
Scheme overview:
This award is to commence in early 2010 in a field relevant to:

The fellowship will initially be awarded for one year but the successful applicant will have the opportunity to apply for up to two annual extensions.

Candidates must have been awarded their PhD no more than three years prior to the closing date for applications or else their PhD must be awarded by December of the year of application.

Exceptions may be made where an applicant can show that they have had an unavoidable career disruption such as family leave, serious illness, war etc.

The Postdoctoral Fellowships will provide a maximum of $100,000 pa and approximately 75% salary + 25% consumables.

Arthritis Australia Fellowships 

Scheme overview:
The objectives of the research and professional education program are to support specific research projects into arthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders as well as to support and advance the career development of scientists and clinical investigators committed to research into arthritis and allied disorders.

The Heald Fellowship ($50,000) is available for research programs both overseas and in Australia. Please note that this is for one year only and there will be no renewals, except in rare circumstances e.g. part-time research. There is a preference for research overseas but Australian-based research will be considered.

Awards are available to clinical, scientific and allied health professionals who are Australian citizens or permanent residents.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Advanced Post Doctoral Fellowships

Scheme overview:
The Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship program is designed to:

The award is for a period of 3 years and during the fellowship phase, the applicant is required to work with a sponsor who can provide a training environment conducive to beginning a career in diabetes-relevant research.

The fellowships are intended for those in a relatively early stage of their career. Generally, their first degree (PhD, MD or equivalent) will have been received no more than 5 years before the fellowship. This program is targeted to those who would benefit from postdoctoral research training in preparation for later faculty appointments (therefore, applicants may not have faculty appointments).

There are no citizenship requirements for this program.

Budgets of up to USD 90,000 per year for up to 3 years may be requested.

Scheme overview:
The MND Research Institute invites applications for this prestigious research Fellowship for motor neurone disease research in Australia. The Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship is directed towards postdoctoral scientists with a track record of research in the areas of neuroscience related to motor neurone disease. Salary for a full-time research fellow will be funded at $72,500 p.a. for a period of up to three years.
