Preparing for Health Science workshop

Deadline for registration extended to 10 February
This four-day workshop is designed to smooth the transition to university
studies for students about to commence any of the following UniSA health
science undergraduate programs: Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Nursing, Midwifery,
Medical Sciences, Podiatry,
Occupational Therapy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Laboratory Medicine, Medical Radiation, Nutrition and Food
Sciences, Health Science, and Human Movement and Health Studies.
Has it been a long time since you have studied?
Have you not studied a science subject in year 11 or 12?
Are you anxious about understanding medical terms?
Would you like to improve your understanding of medical concepts?
Is English your second language?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, the Preparing for Health
Science workshop can help you with scientific concepts that you will need to
understand before beginning your degree.

The Preparing for Health Science workshop consists of a series of
lectures and activities to introduce basic scientific ideas that will
feature in your program.
Topics covered include:
- Human body organisation
- Homeostasis
- Medical terminology
- Basic chemistry and physics as they relate to the human body
- Study skills

registration is only accepted from students who receive offers in February.

- What is the aim of this course?
The Preparing for Health Science
workshop is designed to help all incoming UniSA health sciences
students, particularly those who have little or no background in
biology, chemistry or physics. It aims to provide the necessary
foundation knowledge, and help students develop a confident approach
towards science subjects. The workshop will give you confidence and
provide you with a head-start in understanding your course material.

- Who should attend this course?
You are likely to benefit most if you
are:
- a school leaver and have not studied science subjects in Year
12
- a mature-age student
- anxious about studying science subjects
- haven't studied sciences for a long time.
- I have done Year 12 Biology. Is it still useful to enrol in this
course?
Students who have not done science subjects in Year 12 benefit
most. However, others also may find it beneficial, as this course
material relates and integrates to Human Anatomy, Human Physiology and
Pathophysiology (disease process).
One past student commented: "Even
though students may have done Year 11 and 12 Biology, I don't think that
the school course covers half of what this course did."

- What topics will this course cover?
Topics include:
- an overview of human body organisation (including cells,
tissues, organs, organ systems, principles of homeostasis and
transportation)
- fundamentals of medical
terminology (including prefixes, root words, and construction of complex
medical terms)
- basics of Biological and Physical Sciences (atoms, ions,
molecules, electrolytes, compounds, acids, bases, buffers, pressure, heat,
body fluids, solutions)
- study skills.

- When is this course conducted and how long is it?
This is a four-day course conducted from 14-17 February between 9.30am to 4.00pm each day.
(Please note that you are required to be present at 9am on the first day).

University of South Australia, City East
Campus, Frome Road. The initial meeting point is room H2-02 in the Hetzel
building.

- Do I have to be a UniSA student to be able to enrol into this course?
Yes, this course is aimed at UniSA students who are enrolled in the Division
of Health Sciences. However, if there are places available and you have a
strong reason for wanting to do this course, we may be able to offer you a
place. In the registration form, please state which University you will be
undertaking your tertiary education, and your reason/s for wanting to do the
course. If we are unable to offer you a place, a full refund will be made.

- How do I enrol?
After the University offers are made, you will receive a
pamphlet about this course. You can complete the registration form attached

- Can I enrol in part of the course?
No. There is no part or day
registration available.

- I live too far away from Adelaide and cannot attend the course; can you
please send me the printed material?
This course material is designed to be
delivered face-to-face, on-campus as an internal mode. There is little use
for you if you receive the printed material only.

- Are there practical sessions in this course?
Yes, you will spend two
afternoons in the laboratory doing interesting and relevant practicals.

- Will I be placed with students who will be undertaking the same program
as me?
Yes, in the workshop you will be grouped with students who will be
undertaking the same program as you, so you will have the opportunity to
make friends and meet some of the teaching staff.

- Is there an exam at the end of the course?
No, there is no exam but there
will be an informal self-assessment test towards the end of the course. This
test is marked and returned to you to provide you with feedback. This test
is for you to identify where your weaknesses are, and also to know how much
knowledge you have gained during the four days of the course.

- What is the deadline to enrol?
3 February 2012, except for students
receiving an offer in February.

- Are late registrations accepted?
As places are limited, we may not be
able to accept registrations after the deadline. However, if there are
places available, we may be able to accept late registrations without
penalty.

- Do you provide notes?
Yes, we do, in the form of a booklet.

- Do I need to buy a textbook for this course?
There is no set textbook for
this course. However, there is a useful textbook you may like to consider
buying: Garrett, L.K., 2010; Get ready for A & P. Pearson Benjamin Cummings.
It is available at Unibooks, City East campus. Approximate cost $40. Student
discount may be available.

- Do I receive a notification about my enrolment confirmation?
Yes, you will receive an email confirming your enrolment.
All communication through email only. Please include your current email
address in your registration form. Please also make sure that your email
box is no full.

- Do I receive the receipt for the payment in mail?
No, we will not mail
out the receipts to you but we will give out the receipts at the time of the
registration on the morning of the first day of the course.

- After enrolling for the course, if I am not able to attend, will I get my
money back?
A full refund will be given if advised in writing via email at least
five working days before the start of the course. After this period, if you
are unable to attend the course due to unavoidable circumstances, half of
the registration fee will be refunded.

- How much does it cost?
Course fee is $385 (incl. GST) for four days, which also covers the cost
of printed materials.

- What do I bring?
A pen and a writing pad.

- I am from the country/interstate, do you provide
accomodation?
No, we don't provide accommodation to students, however, there may be
some places available at St Ann's College. You can contact them directly
on (08) 8267 1478. Student discount price approximately $40 per night.
