Professor Leonie Segal
Foundation Chair in Health Economics and Policy
Professor Leonie Segal heads the Health Economics and Policy Group which was established in mid 2007 to build capacity in health economics, promote methodological advances in health economics and contribute to a rigorous evidence-based approach to the development of government policy in the fields of health and welfare. The work of the research group is primarily focused at system level issues and the health of populations.
The Group is predominantly a research group, but is also developing a seminar and workshop program in part to provide training for government officers in health economics and associated policy issues. This research sits at the academic, policy practice interface, contributing not just to the state of knowledge, but also through influence on policy and clinical practice improving outcomes for members of society.
Professor Segal is a public policy economist with over 25 years research experience concerned with achieving an efficient mix of health and welfare services. Her research career commenced as a public policy consultant to governments and continued as Deputy Director of the Centre for Health Economics, Monash University. She is now at the University of South Australia having been recently recruited into the Foundation Chair in Health Economics and Policy.
Her mandate is to build capacity in health economics and work with government to support evidence-based policy development. She has published widely on health economics with 58 articles and book chapters and 63 reports to government since 1992. She has 4 current nationally competitive grants with total research income of over $8 million. Professor Segal sits on various high level committees, including the Australian Medical Council Policy Committee and the Professional Programs and Services Advisory Committee.
