Food, place, gender and ethnicity
Dr Jean Durez is involved in ongoing research on the intersections of food, place, gender and ethnicity. Jean is currently involved in an ethnographic study of Ethiopian food businesses in the Adelaide suburb of Mile End. This research traces the way in which proprietors use cultural meanings of food to enable productive relations between Ethiopian and other ethnic groups, and with mainstream culture.

Another project focuses on examples of cosmopolitan cities in the Asia-Pacific region, and raises questions about the significance of public spaces (in this case, food markets) for fostering intercultural interactivity. During 2008, a third project will investigate 'ethnic' neighbourhoods (particularly Katong in Singapore, with laksa as its iconic dish) as sites of migrant place making and touristic invention. |
