Ms. Hourani is currently the Director of the Lebanese Emigration Research Center at Notre Dame University and a member of the University's Research Board. From 2003-2006, Ms. Hourani served as an expert on migration in the Maronite Patriarchal Synod. Ms. Hourani has taught at and was an Advisor to the Vice President for International Academic Relations of the Holy Spirit University in Lebanon. Prior to that, Ms. Hourani worked as an International Development Consultant to the World Bank and several other organizations in Washington, D.C.
Although Lebanese emigrants have always been part of Lebanon's life, Lebanon has not actually had a specific diaspora policy. Ms Hourani's discussion will not deal with the migration process, or the motives for migration. It will focus, instead, on some selected aspects of the Lebanese diaspora and homeland relations. It will draw attention to some of the important networks connecting the Lebanese diaspora with Lebanon and will review courses of action undertaken by the Lebanese government to strengthen ties with its diaspora.
