Hawke Building opening
The official opening of the Hawke Building took place on the Thursday 11 October 2007. A special opening event included a traditional indigenous smoking ceremony to welcome the new building and special guests of honour included the Hon Bob Hawke, Australian Prime Minister from 1983-1991, after whom the building was named, and another former Prime Minister, the Hon Gough Whitlam (Prime Minister from 5 December 1972 – 11 November 1975).The Hawke Centre raised over $4m in private donations towards the building which is open to the public and features the Kerry Packer Civic Gallery and the Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art.
