Beyond the Jesus Question
The question of who exactly was Jesus of Nazareth is one that has fascinated countless historians, theologians, filmmakers and lay-people for near two millennia. Written by Adjunct Professor Robert Crotty from UniSA’s Centre for Research in Education, Equity and Work, Beyond the Jesus Question aims to give an honest response to a provocative question. Not intending to either promote or denigrate religion, Crotty takes a broad approach, looking at topics including the Dead Sea Scrolls, Gnostic literature, archaeological material from the Jewish period, the role of Jesus’ brother James, and the early shape of Christianity. Arguing that the historical identification of Jesus will remain
conjectural, the book’s main thesis is that the identity of the
historical Jesus is not important for the religious believer – that the
‘Jesus’ of the Christian gospels is a socio-symbolic form that already
had a long history in the earlier story of Judaism. |
