Imagined landscapes

Phantasia is a touring exhibition of the Australian Centre for Photography that presents work by Kimber, who graduated in 1981 with a Fine Art Degree in Photography.

"Phantasia is an odyssey of the fabulous," says Samstag Museum Director, Erica Green.

"Vivid, complex and magical, the works in Phantasia abandon the traditional realm of the photographic (the real world) to conjure images of the fantastical.

"These enchanted scenes are either created as theatrical settings that are then photographed, or assembled from myriad photographic fragments.

"The work by Mark Kimber shows landscapes of the imagination."

Kimber says his fictive landscapes come from memories of his childhood.

"I have digitally brought together the landscapes that fascinated me as child and combined them with my own photographic landscape images in an attempt to relocate that place of wonder," he said.

"The gap between memory and experience, between then and now, or between imagination and realisation, is of course, unbridgeable but that doesn’t stop us from trying."

The Phantasia exhibition will be open until July 24. Check online for more information about any of the Samstag Museum exhibitions - www.unisa.edu.au/samstagmuseum
