Exchange time

Katherine AndersonAn international student exchange paid dividends for Katherine Anderson.

The winner of the 2004 Ehrenberg Scholarship for marketing, Katherine Anderson (pictured) recently learned why student exchange programs can be more than just an opportunity to study in another country.

In addition to her formal studies at Denmark’s Aarhus School of Business, Anderson made the most of the "lively" city, getting involved in many extracurricular student activities and soaking up her surroundings.

"The Aarhus School of Business is a small, multi-lingual school combining a mixture of Danish students, postgraduate international students and exchange students, the majority of who are French," she said.

But the exchange also acted as a springboard to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - a three-month internship with Time magazine based in London and covering projects across the British Isles, continental Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

"The opportunity for an internship in the UK emerged when Ehrenberg-Institute researcher Virginia Beal heard that I was looking for an internship and offered to send my resume to some of her contacts," said Anderson

And she soon found out how much she would benefit from the Institute’s worldwide connections.

At Time Anderson was responsible for many jobs within Time including; providing research support to their publisher and sales departments across Europe, ad performance reports, assisting with pitches and client and media research.

"The internship was a great way for me to apply my knowledge and gain some experience at one of the most recognisable magazines, and as a researcher I now have a better understanding how marketing knowledge and research is used by the industry," she said.

Anderson has returned home to complete her undergraduate degree and plans to study a Masters Degree at UniSA’s Ehrenberg-Bass Institute.

She said that anybody considering future employment in Europe could really benefit from being involved in a student exchange program and seeking internship opportunities overseas.
