Network Now gets results
by Linda Hein
Communication
and media management graduate, Briar Whitfield, has landed her dream
job in public relations - and she credits the UniSA Network Now
dinner for pointing her in the right direction.
Now in its fourth year, Network Now is the University’s largest networking dinner where students and graduates mix with alumni and business leaders.
Whitfield met Director of Norwood-based PR consultancy communikate et al, Alison Rogers, at the 2005 dinner and learned about the firm’s work experience volunteer program, which she quickly followed up on.
"Without Network Now I would never have been able to just walk up to Alison and ask what was happening at communikate et al," Whitfield said.
"I was absolutely terrified, but just booked and told myself I had to go because I had the ticket.
"Once I was there I was fine and it was such a fantastic opportunity to meet Alison and learn about and then do the work experience program.
Whitfield went on to work in advertising for a Hills-based newspaper, but enjoyed her time at communikate et al so much she kept in touch via their website.
When she saw a vacancy she had no hesitation in applying for it, landed the job and loves her new role working with a range of clients that include Adam Internet, McDonald’s, Ord Minnett, St John’s Grammar and Balfours.
For Rogers, the Network Now events are a great way to keep in touch with the needs of young graduates.
"Every person in business would say it is hard finding good quality staff, especially in a market with such labour shortages and, in a company like ours, having good quality staff is fundamental.
"We can see who’s out there and how we can ensure our business is an employer of choice that excites potential employees and those keen to get into our industry."
The 2008 Network Now dinner will be held on Thursday August 14 at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
A discounted price of $90 for UniSA graduates and $65 for students is being offered to UniSA News readers who purchase a ticket before June 19.
