Business in China up close

(l to r) MBA students Andrew Clayton, Linda Rust, Matthew Voon, Kym Myall and Jason Murray outside the Shanghai Futures ExchangeA group of 42 MBA students from UniSA’s International Graduate School of Business (IGSB) recently returned to Australia with renewed enthusiasm after a recent visit to China as part of the Business in China Intensive School (BICIS) – a vital component of their MBA study.

The students spent two weeks in Shanghai and Beijing exploring for themselves the business and management practices that operate in what is arguably the most dynamic economy in the world.

The trip combined structured academic learning with visits to political, business and cultural establishments, providing unique opportunities for business networking and exposing participants to Chinese firms with different ownership structures and contrasting competitive behaviors in domestic and foreign markets.

Touted by participants as "one of the most significant learning experiences in the MBA", the BICIS 2008 program fostered close working relationships between participants and provided them with the opportunity to build and develop long-term personal and business relationships.

The program also focused on fusing practices between East and West, reflecting the growing convergence of Chinese business and management practices into the international mainstream, while maintaining their unique political and social characteristics.

Beijing partner to the program and one of the most prestigious academic establishments in China, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, hosted four days of activities, including a session on Social harmony in China in the face of rapid economic development.

The two-week program ended with a "closing ceremony" in Beijing that was attended by senior officials from AUSTRADE and Beijing Municipal Government, IGSB alumni, senior academics from local universities and expatriates working in Beijing.

The Business in China Intensive School will run again in April 2009, and interested students will be invited to apply for a place in September 2008.
