UniSA
honoured one of its greatest advocates last month when metallurgist,
mining engineer and manager Norton Jackson AM was made an Honorary
Doctor of the University.
Now 86, Dr Jackson graduated from the SA School of Mines and the University of Adelaide (1936 to1942) and has had an illustrious international career in the minerals and mining industries. Between 1943 and 1946 he served in the Australian Citizen Military Forces at home and in New Guinea and New Britain.
In his working life as a research chemist, senior mining engineer and mining industry director, he worked in Fiji, Hong Kong, the US and Holland and visited many other countries around the world.
A member of the University Council from 1995 to 1998, Dr Jackson served on the Development Board of the University of South Australia Foundation for several years and has been Chair of the UniSA Bequest Committee since 1999.
He is a passionate advocate for higher education and an ambassador for UniSA internationally in his many business trips across the globe. He has embraced the new transnational education environment with enthusiasm, attending offshore graduations and making important relationships with international alumni.
Dr Jackson’s contribution to Australian society was acknowledged with an Order of Australia for services to the mining industry in 1987 and in 2001 with the presentation of a Centenary Medal for his contribution to Australian society. He was made a Fellow of UniSA in 1999.
In conferring the Honorary Doctorate, the University acknowledges Dr Jackson’s distinguished contribution to SA and the UniSA community worldwide.
