News headliner

Rebecca MorseUniSA graduates featured prominently at the South Australian Media Awards held this year, winning seven of 25 awards in a broad range of categories including Best Radio Current Affairs report and Best Coverage of Social Equity Affairs. But it was journalism graduate Rebecca Morse (pictured) who really shone on the night, winning both Best TV News Report and the gold medal for SA Journalist of the Year.

A reporter and news reader with the ABC, Morse was awarded the top prize for her body of work but particularly for her work on the Anglican Church crisis surrounding Archbishop Dr Ian George, in which she broke a series of exclusives on the story. She was commended for “displaying a standard of professional excellence to which her peers can and should aspire”.

UniSA’s Associate Professor of Journalism, Ian Richards, who presented Morse with her award, taught her when she was a student at UniSA.

“She was an outstanding student and I knew she would make an outstanding journalist,” he said.

“It’s fantastic to have UniSA sponsor this, the top award for SA journalism – and even more fantastic to have it won by one of our graduates. And it’s very rewarding to see so many UniSA journalism graduates nominated in the awards. Their success is a reflection of the success of the journalism program and what it sets out to do – educate journalists.”

Rebecca Morse will also be attending UniSA’s Network Now event on May 12.
