Fast forward film career

Photographer and film maker: Felix Chiu takes on everything from product shoots to nuptials in Hong Kong. Felix Chiu was 18 years old when he made the move from Hong Kong to South Australia to study.

Today, at just 23 years old, Chiu has his own photography business in Hong Kong, FlatSpacing Studio, and is exploring every opportunity to work in film.

He came to Adelaide fresh from high school to study IT at TAFE. But it wasn’t long before his real passions – film and photography – drew him to a degree program in Multimedia Studies at UniSA’s Magill campus.

And Chiu set a cracking pace, taking on the extra load of five courses a year and all possible summer and extra programs to help him finish the degree quickly. But it wasn’t because he wanted to get back home – he says his time in Adelaide was wonderful.

“It is the kind of place that makes it easy to study – not too frantic or busy and at the same time interesting and with a lovely environment,” he said.

“The hills are beautiful and you can’t go past the wonderful steaks in Hahndorf.

“I lived in a share house in Paradise – an amazing name for a suburb.

“My sisters did their degrees in Melbourne, but South Australia was so friendly and easy to get around I think I had a better deal. I also made lots of local friends, which was great.”

Chiu says his future lies in mastering all the new developments in digital production technology.

“If UniSA ever offers a Masters in Digital Production I may just come back and study in Adelaide again – I miss those Hahndorf steaks.”
