Kicking goals in graphic design
David
Lawson is nearing the end of a visual communications degree at UniSA,
and he's feeling more confident about his employment prospects thanks to
the experience he's gained during a six month work placement at a local
graphic design company.
As the second UniSA student to win a scholarship sponsored by Kick Brand
Management, David received $5000 and the opportunity to boost his skills
during a six month three day a week work placement.
It's been an eye opening experience, says the 22-year-old honours
student. The first project they assigned me was redesigning the
company's look for their stationery, letterheads, DVD covers et cetera,
which was a bit scary because I wanted to make a good impression. But I
did OK they liked it and it's at the printers now, he says.
Working to tight deadlines is one of the skills David has honed while at
Kick. At uni you'll get several weeks to work on a proposal, but in
industry you've got to do it in a couple of days, so having that
experience as well as advice from the designers here has really been
invaluable.
UniSA visual communications program director Ron Corso says the fact
that Kick was prepared to offer the scholarship exclusively to UniSA
students was a testament to the high calibre of the visual
communications program. And the feedback we've received on our
students' performance has been outstanding, he said. I'd like to thank
Kick's director Domenic Lagana for his support, both with the
scholarship and a recent donation to the school's Art and Design
Research fund.
