Selecting assessment to support development of graduate qualities

Overview

Each course has a particular responsibility in developing graduate qualities. A course's assessment tasks are key to fulfilling this responsibility. Consequently, assessment needs to be designed with graduate qualities in mind. To successfully complete Section 2.6 of the Course Statement you will need to clearly indicate how they are being addressed in your assessment design (for more information about this aspect of course and program design, see Assessment tasks and development of graduate qualities).

Designing assessment for a course

When designing assessment for a course you need to keep in mind

Types of assessment

There are many different forms of assessment available, and each provides differing opportunities to assess graduate qualities. The graduate qualities assessment ideas tool helps you to identify assessment tasks suitable for the GQ your course has a responsibility to develop.

The Assessing students for graduate qualities tool (PDF file 51KB) approaches the issue from the reverse perspective and allows you to identify the graduate qualities your assessment tasks are aligned with. This can be useful for mapping the development of graduate qualities across the assessment tasks of a whole program of courses.

The following tables offer examples of Section 2.6 in the Course statement showing assessment plans that assess a body of knowledge as well as defined graduate qualities. Please note that these tables are to be used as a guide and is not intended to be prescriptive.
