Asia Pacific Breakthrough: The Women, Faith and Development Summit

2nd-3rd December 2009 Federation Square, Melbourne

Women's organisations, faith communities and development agencies will come together in the common call to eliminate global poverty by empowering women and girls. A new alliance will also be launched at the Summit to catalyse an Asia pacific wide movement to increase investment in women and girls.

Keynote speakers include: Sister Joan Chittister OSB (Founder and Executive Director of Benetvision, Chair of Global Peace Initiative for Women); Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda (General Secretary of the World YWCA) and The Honourable Dame Carol Kidu CBE MP (Minister for Community Development & Religion & Sports, Papua New Guinea)

Experience Suite points: attendance at the Summit can reward you with 5 points towards your Experience Suite.

Challenge: Future

Challenge: Future is an online global student competition aimed at promoting collaboration and innovation for a global sustainable future. It is envisioned as a collaborative contest bringing together creative students, mentors, business schools, innovative organisations and ideas from around the globe.

The theme of the 2009 competition is Future of Connecting and applications can be lodged according to one of six challenge subthemes:

To take part in the competition: Form a  Challenge: Future team ( between 2-4 people per team), choose one of the six challenge subthemes your team will tackle, start brainstorming solutions to the challenges and register your proposal via the Challenge: Future website by the 18 November 2009.

The first round of the competition starts on 21 November 2009. 180 selected teams will then qualify for the semi-finals in January, and 18 finalist teams will travel to Bled, Slovenia in April 2010 to compete for a EUR 20,000 grand award.

Experience Suite points: teams who qualify for the first round can receive 5 points, semi-finals receive 10 points, and finals in Slovenia 15 points

 Doing Business in Europe
Short term overseas study opportunity studying at Arnhem Business School in The Netherlands.

Session 1: 5 June - 25 June 2010
Session 2: 26 June - 17 July 2010

Admission requirements: Suitable for 2nd or 3rd year students of business and/or management related undergraduate degree. international students will need an IELTS score of at least 6.5. Students must also meet the UniSA eligibility criteria which can be found here.

Program: The first week of class starts with introductions to Dutch and European Culture and Economy and is followed by a business case. This case consists of a company visit, a written group assignment for this particular company and an oral presentation. The second week consists of different seminars covering topics in European Logistics, Consumer Behaviour and Business Law. The third and final week is reserved for the Business Management Game. Students work together in a 'management team'; making executive decisions in multicultural groups, applying business knowledge, intercultural skills and a professional attitude.

Excursions: Organised day trips to Rotterdam and Amsterdam are part of the program and take place on Fridays.

Accommodation: Accommodation is provided off campus in shared housing on the basis of self catering.

Course costs: The program fee is EUR 1900 per student. This includes accommodation, airport pick up and drop off service, transportation between accommodation and campus on school days, visits and excursions, welcome and farewell dinner and medical insurance for the duration of the program.

Scholarships: A travel grant of $1000 may be available for eligible students, please see below contact for more details.

Global Leadership program with AIM Overseas

AIM Overseas  are offering a 4 week intensive Global Leadership Program in Prague, Czech Republic from 1 July to 1 August 2010. There's only a limited number of places offered to participants from around the world and the last edition saw students from 22 different countries take part.

The program is very dynamic and interactive and includes a range of academic classes on: Philosophies of Leadership, Global Business, Human Rights, Diplomacy, Globalisation, Comparative Study of Religion, Peace and Conflict and Strategies of Negotiation, as well as cultural activities, fieldtrips and community work. Workshops give you an opportunity to learn practical skills such as public speaking, writing a business plan or how to implement a project in your home community.

You might be able to have the program count for up to 9 credits towards your degree and 20 points towards your Global Experience Suite.

You may also be eligible for OS-HELP, a $5500 government loan scheme to help pay for overseas study and there may be some  travel grants available (academic credit must be approved).

AIM Overseas
AIM Overseas are also offering opportunities to study overseas in one of its 3-4 week short programs. Programs include Health Science programs in Mexico and Thailand, Tourism Management and Practice, Teacher Education in the US in addition to Volunteering opportunities worldwide in conservation, community and more.

All programs are delivered in English and depending on your program you may apply for credit and funding.

Volunteer with TIA International Aid

TIA International Aid is an organisation based in Adelaide, founded in February 2009 specifically to raise money for the support of disadvantaged children in Bolivia, and later, in other countries. Tia International Aid was established in February 2009 by UniSA student, Tessa Henwood-Mitchell.
