Global Experience exceeds expectations

A program designed to give students a competitive edge in the global jobs market is taking off at UniSA. Student interest in Global Experience has soared since it was introduced at UniSA last year, with numbers enrolled in the required course Global Experience Professional Development (BUSS 1056) already exceeding the 2010 target.

Global Experience Program Director Associate Professor Vicki Feast said more than 200 students have enrolled in the course.

Reaching out to make a difference

Final year human resource management student, Briony James is taking her passion for making a difference to a new level.

The 23-year old has just returned from Nuang Kyo Met School in Mae Sot, Thailand where she worked at an orphanage with underprivileged children and says that while the experience was challenging and exhausting, its just one of the ways she hopes to make a real contribution.

Careers without borders

It's a cliche but, more than ever, the world is a 'global village'. Technological and social advances allow people with the right skills and experience to move through a variety of jobs, with different employers and in different places, with greater ease than ever before.

Travel broadens the degree

The university sector will invest at least $20 million in study abroad programs this year in a bid to help Australian graduates brush up on their international knowledge and stand out in an increasingly global employment market.

The number of students going abroad for study had been growing each year and about 6 per cent of those who graduated in 2007, or 8354 undergraduates, spent some time overseas as part of their course.

Live and learn

FlagsJade Cooper spent most of her last year living in a dorm room, surrounded by Japanese students, trying not to speak a word of English and "having fun". The 21-year-old University of Adelaide student took part in a year-long exchange to a university in Osaka, Japan, to improve her language skills and live out a long-held dream.

"I've always wanted to do it, since I was really little...to get out and challenge myself and do something completely different," the fourth-year law and international studies student said. " It was exciting- it was the best thing I've ever done and absolutely amazing."
