Founded in 1881, the University of Liverpool is the original ‘redbrick’ university. One of the founding members of the prestigious Russell Group, University of Liverpool makes the top 24 research intensive universities in the UK and ranks in the top 200 universities worldwide for internationally recognised research.

The University of Liverpool is a world-class player in many areas of academia. A key partner in science and engineering, the discoveries at the CERN reactor in Switzerland and some of the world leaders in chemistry are based at the University. The University is also home to one of the UK’s top departments of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology, the only Institute of Irish Studies outside of Ireland and an AACSB-accredited Management School.

Liverpool is at the forefront of innovative treatments and healthcare, including developing new drugs to tackle the Ebola virus, and treatments to create a personalised approach to healthcare.

The University has two offshore campus, Singapore and China, and three in the UK.

Liverpool is the fifth largest metropolitan area in the UK, situated in the North West of the country. The city is just 2 hours by train from London and 45 minutes by train from Manchester. Liverpool is also within driving distance of both the scenic Lake District and North Wales which are wonderful for hiking and outdoor activities. Liverpool is renowned as the home of premier league football clubs, Liverpool FC and Everton FC, as well as being the home of The Beatles. The city of Liverpool is divided into 'boroughs', with the University located in the heart of the central borough.

It shares land borders with Wales to the west and Scotland to the north, and is separated from continental Europe by the North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south. The island of Great Britain is however easily traversed by the Channel Tunnel as well as via rail, air, or sea.

England’s population of 55.6 million people comprises 84% of the population of the UK. The country has a density of 407 people per square km overall, however London (the capital of England and the UK), has a population at 8.8 million people alone at a density of 5,177 people per square km, more than ten times that of any other British region. Depending upon where you go, you can experience one of the most populated cities in the world, or wander alone on the moors.

England is renowned for many reasons, and is a very popular exchange location. With a well-documented and turbulent history, England offers you the opportunity to visit structures from the Neolithic era, see Roman artefacts, or visit some of the greatest museums and galleries in the world.

The massive variety of locations, interesting cultures, career opportunities, ease of travel, diverse cuisine, and thrilling history make England a prime location for exchange.

Did you know…..?

Nowhere in England is more than 113km from the sea. *English people consume more tea per capita than anybody else in the world (2.5 times more than the Japanese and 22 times more than the Americans or the French). *French was the official language of England for about 300 years, from 1066 till 1362.

All students must meet standard exchange selection criteria and any host institution restrictions.

Find courses at University of Liverpool

The University will be offering a transfer service for new students arriving at Manchester International Airport (MAN) on the official arrival day(s). Invitations for the service will be automatically sent via email to those eligible. Students staying in University accommodation will be provided with this service free of charge. If you have any concerns in the meantime however, please email erasmus@liverpool.ac.uk and a member of the study abroad team will respond. 

Students staying in University accommodation can book onto the service early by logging onto the accommodation section in  Liverpool Life and selecting Airport Meet and Greet in the Requests section. If you have any concerns in the meantime however, please email meetandgreet@liv.ac.uk and a member of the welcome team will respond.

University of Liverpool offers on-campus accommodation for exchange students in the Study Abroad Village. You will live with other international students as well as University of Liverpool home students who will study abroad this year or have just returned.

If you are staying for Semester 1 only, you can apply for one of the rooms available in the Study Abroad Village (Tudor Close & Melville Grove). You should apply as early as possible to secure your place.

If you are staying for Semester 2 only, you are guaranteed a place in University accommodation. Where possible, you will be placed in the Study Abroad Village. If you wish to take up your place, apply via Liverpool Life.

As an exchange partner with the University of South Australia, you do not have to pay tuition fees to University of Liverpool, instead you will pay tuition as you would normally at UniSA.
