Some
things never change. The difference a good education makes hasn’t changed. Quality education opens a world of possibility and opportunity to young people. This is especially true for our state’s financially disadvantaged and rural or isolated students.
But the tools have changed. Advances in technology are constantly altering the face of education. Unfortunately the cost of resources and access leaves some students behind.
Please
help disadvantaged students. Through the following programs UniSA extends
opportunities to students who would otherwise not be able to access an
education.
Your donation to these programs can have an effect that lasts a lifetime.
Crucial support to academically able but financially disadvantaged students from isolated locations. The funds help students with the relocation and accommodation expenses of a university education.
Laptop computers are provided on short-term loan to UniSA students who don’t have access to a computer at home. Currently 20 laptops are available from the UniSA library, each one servicing up to 1,000 students across four campuses. The cost of a new laptop for this program is approximately $2,500.
Thanks to the generosity of corporate and individual donors, the 2007
appeal for the Gavin Wanganeen Indigenous Scholarship raised over $30,000,
making it possible for the program to continue well into 2010.
Gavin Wanganeen is the first Aboriginal to receive an AFL life membership for playing 300 official matches. He is also a premiership star, Brownlow medallist, five-time All Australian and Best-and-Fairest winner with Port Adelaide Football Club. Gavin is a role model and representative for Indigenous youth in Australia and UniSA is the only university in Australia which has identified a commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education in its charter.
The Gavin Wanganeen Indigenous Scholarship is open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders who are enrolled in any undergraduate program at UniSA. Recipients are chosen from candidates who are financially or educationally disadvantaged, who can show that they have the will to succeed and who actively participate in community activity.
The scholarship, valued at $5,000 per annum, is available for each year of the recipient's undergraduate program at UniSA (3 or 4 years).
