When you commence study as a Commonwealth supported student you will be eligible for a student learning entitlement (SLE) equivalent to seven years of full-time study. As you progress through your chosen program you will consume your SLE according to the courses you enrol in. You are only able to study in a commonwealth supported place while you have SLE available to you.
Further information about Student Learning Entitlement.
HECS-HELP (Higher Education Loan Program) is a form of Commonwealth assistance that helps students to pay their student contribution.
The are two forms of HECS-HELP available.
You are eligible for HECS-HELP if you are either:
If you have answered yes to these questions then you will incur a HECS-HELP debt for any courses that you are enrolled in at the census date.
You will not be required to pay back this debt until your income reaches a certain amount. This amount is the minimum threshold for compulsory repayments of HECS-HELP loans.
For further information on HECS-HELP loans, please the Australian Taxation Office website.
The census date is the deadline that your enrolment and fees must be finalised by for each Study Period.
There is a census date for each course in which you are enrolled and this information is available to you via myEnrolment.
Please see the academic calendar for the dates for withdraw grades.
This means that even though you may not be studying the course after the census date, you will still be required to pay fees for the entire course because you failed to drop the course in time and so were still enrolled at the time of the census date.
It is very important to be aware of the census dates for each of your courses.
These are the dates at which all of your student enrolment details, including student contribution amounts, must be finalised.
Whether you choose to pay your student contribution upfront, apply for HECS-HELP, or a combination of both, you are still required to finalise all of these arrangements by the census date.
After the census date for each Study Period that you are enrolled your Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN) will be available online through myUniSA. Your CAN will show details of your enrolment at the census date including:
Courses in which you are enrolled
Student contribution amounts
Student Learning Entitlement (SLE) usage
HELP assistance
It is important to check all details on your CAN carefully. If there are any errors, please notify the University within 14 days of the issue date of the notice. Any errors will need to be reported to Campus Central using the following form: Application for Post Census Correction of Enrolment Errors form (DOC 66KB).
The Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) is a unique identifier, used by the University and the Australian Government, to calculate and monitor the following:
Please see here for further information about the Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN).
You are responsible for managing your enrolment (including making sure that you are enrolled in the correct courses for your program) and for ensuring that all enrolment and financial details are finalised by the census date for each Study Period.
You should ensure that, by the census date, you have:
Failure to do this will result in the University cancelling your enrolment.
